Cetaceans

Whales, dolphins and porpoises - conservation, research, education, protection

NAMMCO

Norway

NAMMCO is an international regional body for cooperation on the conservation, management and study of marine mammals in the North Atlantic. The four partners are Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland and Norway. They have the aim of 'sustainable and responsible utilisation of all living marine resources, including marine mammals.' Through their cooperation under the umbrella NAMMCO, they 'aim to strengthen and further develop effective conservation and management measures for marine mammals'.

NETCET

Adriatic Sea

The stated main objective of the NETCET project is 'to develop common strategies for the conservation of cetaceans and sea turtles in the Adriatic through regional cooperation. Due to the migratory nature of these species cross-border collaboration and shared management responsibility between Adriatic states is crucial in order to plan effective long-term conservation strategies.'

Namibian Dolphin Project

Namibia

The Namibian Dolphin Project is a research and conservation organization run by several independent scientists and educators. Their mission is primarily to research Namibia’s cetaceans to generate data on these populations that can be used for their conservation through management. Their focus is on coastal dolphins, as well as humpback whales, right whales and leatherback turtles. Additionally they are work with the community through an outreach programme to increase awareness of the Namibia’s marine life.

National Parks and Wildlife Service (Ireland)

Ireland

The role of the NPWS in the marine environment includes protection of marine habitats, protection of marine life in particular Cetaceans (principally dolphins) and seals, marine licencing, marine research and the control of marine research areas, amongst others.

Nature Trust Malta

Malta

Nature Trust (Malta) is one of the oldest non-governmental organisations dealing with the natural environment in the Maltese Islands. Their main focus is on site management of natural areas, environmental education and lobbying for effective environmental legislation. They are also involved in the Rescue of injured marine turtles and stranded dolphins. NTM has a team of dedicated rescue volunteers all professionally trained.

New York Marine Rescue Center

USA

The New York Marine Rescue Center is a rescue and rehabilitation organization that promotes marine conservation. They work to preserve and protect the marine environment through conservation efforts including rescue, rehabilitation, education and research, and are the primary responders for sick or injured seals, sea turtles, dolphins, porpoises and small toothed whales, and maintain the only marine mammal and sea turtle rehabilitation center in New York State.

Norwegian Orca Survey

Norway

Norwegian Orca Survey conducts research into killer whales in Norwegian waters. In the process of studying and monitoring the whales, they collect info about these inhabitants of their waters, which contributes to an ID-Catalogue in existence since 1984 which they inherited in 2013, a considerable database. Their focus is on conservation of the whales and other marine life.

OCC Uruguay

Uruguay

The Organization for the Conservation of Cetaceans (OCC) in Uruguay works for the conservation of the marine ecosystem as well as the environment of the coastal communities, thus integrating ecological, socio-cultural and economic perspectives. They focus on marine conservation environmental education and awareness, responsible marine tourism, sustainable fishing and the creation of offshore MPAs.

ORCA Foundation

South Africa

The ORCA Foundation, based in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa, is part of a volunteer community dedicated to marine conservation in South Africa. ORCA together with Nelson Mandela University are conducting active research and monitoring of the endangered humpback dolphin in South Africa. The data collected from this work will be put towards the establishment of a Conservation Plan for the species because the population is estimated to be fewer than 500 individuals along the SA Coast.

ORCA Ireland

Ireland

ORCA Ireland's stated aim is 'to enhance our scientific knowledge and understanding of marine megafauna in Irish waters through conservation, research and education.' They monitor marine megafauna (especially cetaceans), both through research with the help of citizen scientists through their mobile phone recording tool, the Observers App, and real-time cetacean acoustics research.

Ocean Alliance

USA

Ocean Alliance, Inc. works to increase public awareness of the importance of whales and their marine environment, the oceans, through research and public education. 'We work with our scientific partners to collect a broad spectrum of data on whales and ocean life. Ocean Alliance uses this data to advise educators, policy makers, and the general public on wise stewardship of the oceans to mitigate pollution, prevent the collapse of marine mammal populations, and promote ocean and human health.' They have recently developed an innovative, less invasive method for attaching biologging tags on whales using drones, a product which goes by the name SnotBot - see their website and YouTube video for more information.

Ocean Mammal Institute

USA

OMI's objectives are to change people's awareness to better understand the natural world, and to protect ocean mammals. OMI's programs have three goals: To study the impact of human marine activities including noise pollution on whales and dolphins; to apply the results of research to protecting marine mammals and their environment; to allow people to participate fully in their research in order to educate them about important conservation issues and empower them to act responsibly. By doing research to protect the whales and dolphins, people learn they can help preserve biodiversity, including by addressing the problem of pollution. Operates in the US, Alaska and Hawaii
