Dugong and SeaGrass Conservation Project

Sri Lanka

The Dugong and Seagrass Conservation Project aims to enhance the conservation of dugongs (Dugong dugon) and their associated seagrass ecosystems in eight countries in the Indo-Pacific region : Indonesia, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mozambique, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Timor-Leste and Vanuatu. A priority of the project is to work with local communities to help them understand the benefits of conserving dugongs and their habitat. They focus on sustainable fisheries practices and financial incentives, establishing Locally Managed Marine Protected Areas, and advocating for dugong and seagrass conservation as priorities in national and regional policies and planning. This is a GEF funded project, lasting from 2015-2018.

Dugong and Seagrass Hub

UAE

The Dugong & Seagrass Hub is an online platform designed to share collective tools, experiences and lessons learned whilst working to conserve seagrass ecosystems in dugong range states. This is run out of the UNEP Environment Agency, Convention on Migratory Species Office in Abu Dhabi.

Dyer Island Conservation Trust

South Africa

The Dyer Island Conservation Trust works to conserve and research the fragile and critically important marine eco-system at the southern-most tip of Africa. They strive to protect the largest surviving colonies of the endangered African Penguin whose numbers are at an all-time low; the globally important breeding and calving grounds of the Southern Right Whale; and, the world's densest populations of the vulnerable Great White Shark.

Friends of the Sea Otter

USA

Now part of Defenders of Wildlife. Friends of the Sea Otter was an advocacy group working with state and federal agencies to maintain protection for sea otters and to increase and broaden preservation efforts. FSO also served to educate the public at large about the otters' unique behaviour and habitat. In 2020 they merged with Defenders of Wildlife who continue the work to protect and restore the sea otter populations along the Pacific coast.

Hout Bay Seal Rescue Centre

South Africa

The HBSRC’s mission is to intervene when seals are in distress. They rescue injured, sick or orphaned seals and then rehabilitate and return them to their natural environment within the Cape Peninsula Metropolitan Region.

Ionian Dolphin Project

Greece

Since 1991, the Ionian Dolphin Project, a project of the Tethys Research Institute, aims to ensure the long-term viability of marine mammals, dolphins and Mediterranean monk seals, living in coastal waters of the eastern Ionian Sea. Dolphins and Mediterranean monk seals inhabiting the coastal waters of Greece are facing significant threats. Some of them must deal with increasing human encroachment, while others have disappeared altogether from portions of their former range. The research is concentrated primarily in these three Natura 2000 areas: the Inner Ionian Sea Archipelago (common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins and Mediterranean monk seals), the Gulf of Ambracia (bottlenose dolphins), the waters surrounding the islands of Paxoi and Antipaxoi (bottlenose, common and striped dolphins). Their work includes: continued monitoring of marine mammals through field research methods; monitoring threats to local marine ecosystems (pollution and overfishing); public awareness, education and capacity building initiatives; establishing synergies with stakeholders aimed to raise awareness on the need of developing measures to protect marine mammals and implement existing regulations; dissemination of information in the scientific literature and delivery of management proposals to international agreements and bodies concerned with the protection of marine biodiversity.

KZN Marine Stranding Network

South Africa

The KZN marine stranding network is a group of skilled and trained professionals who provide knowledge, experience and resources to assist with marine strandings along the KwaZulu-Natal coast. They include uShaka Sea World and KZN Sharks Board for dolphins, whales, sharks, seals, turtles and penguins, and CROW (Centre for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife) and SCAR for seabirds)

MAR Expeditions

Mozambique

MAR is committed to being an effective and sustainable partner within the Zavora Bay community, working with the local fishermen to secure their future as well as the future of the marine ecosystems. Their focus is on the movements and abundance of marine animals in Zavora Bay, Mozambique, and beyond. The lab’s core research has focused on manta rays, humpback whales, nudibranchs, and artificial reef and wreck colonization through on-land and underwater surveys since its establishment in 2009. At the same time, via their internships and expeditions, MAR engages with natural scientists, social scientists, university students and engaged naturalists to conduct research and gain experience in fieldwork, and data collection and analysis. The lab is engaged with national and international research institutions conducting research on seahorses, whale sharks, coral reefs, and sea turtles.

MOM

Greece

MOm, the Hellenic society for the study and protection of the monk seal acts for the protection and promotion of the coastal and marine environment of Greece, through the protection of the Mediterranean monk seal, which is the only seal species in the Mediterranean Sea and the most endangered seal on earth. It also has a Northern Aegean Dolphin Project. They work with volunteers in 5 key areas: Research, Rescue and Care, Protection and Management, Information and Awareness, and Environmental Education.

Marine Conservation Cambodia

Cambodia

Marine Conservation Cambodia is a fully licensed research facility specializing in seahorse research in Cambodia, as well as research into the surrounding reefs and benthic areas. Based on Koh Ach Seh in Kep Province.

Marine Research Foundation

Malaysia

MRF’s mission is to improve the status of marine ecosystems and key species through research, conservation and education, both locally and regionally. The goal of our projects is the sustainable use of natural resources with a practical approach to conservation, and we provide efficient solutions to concerned stakeholders. For many years their focus has been the conservation of marine turtles and their habitats, running community-based turtle conservation projects, in-water research and tracking studies and aerial survey projects to support conservation efforts. Sharks and Dugongs also come within their sphere of influence.

Monk Seal Alliance

Monaco

The Mediterranean Monk Seal remains one of the most endangered marine mammals in the world. The Monk Seal Alliance (MSA) was launched in 2019 by its founding Member organizations: the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, the MAVA Foundation, the Segré Foundation, the Sancta Devota Foundation and the Thalassa Foundation, to leverage existing actions and step up concrete monk seal conservation efforts, including: information exchange, networking and collaboration among experts; contributing to implementing existing regional strategies and national action plans through co-funding collaborative projects; mobilizing other philanthropist organizations; and helping to coordinate efforts on monk seal conservation
