Earth Justice

USA

Earth Justice is a non-profit public interest environmental law organisation which uses the power of law to protect people's health, to preserve natural places and wildlife, to advance clean energy, and to combat climate change. Earthjustice fights to protect the ocean ecosystem from overfishing, massive pollution and habitat loss, aiming at a healthy ocean strong enough to weather the changes ahead.

Ecology Action Centre

Canada

The Ecology Action Centre is a member-based environmental charity in Miꞌkmaꞌki (Nova Scotia) taking leadership on critical issues from biodiversity to climate change to environmental justice. Their coastal team works and advocates to protect coastal ecosystems and to help Nova Scotians understand the risks of coastal climate change and the adaptation options available. Their Marine programme aims to protect the marine ecosystem and maintain sustainable fisheries which support coastal communities and livelihoods. Here they focus on three main areas: i. Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture, advocating for fishing and aquaculture policies and practices that minimize harmful impacts on the marine ecosystem. ii. Marine Protection, supporting and advocating for marine protection and pollution reduction in the marine environment, both within Canadian waters and on the high seas. This includes marine protected areas, protection from bottom trawling. iii. Sustainable Seafood, working towards increasing consumer and retailer access to properly labelled, sustainable seafood choices, including SeaChoice.

Environmental Defense Fund

USA

A general environmental group with a marine campaign, the US-based Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) is known for its work in the area of global warming, ecosystem restoration and oceans. In addition to working with fishing communities to offer transitional and financial support, the organisation's goals include the curbing of overfishing and also begin sustainable fishing models in several countries. EDF has national offices in New York and Washington, and several regional offices in the USA, and also in London in Europe, and in China, Mexico and Indonesia.

FishAct

Germany

FishAct is a European movement working to end the illegal overfishing of our oceans. The stated mission is to "end the industrial overfishing of the oceans" and to "empower individuals to get actively involved in building grassroots citizen-led conservation communities". Active local chapters in Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, Spain the United Kingdom and most recently Finland. Campaigns have included gathering support for the release of captive cetaceans, actions against dolphin drive hunts and campaigning to end overfishing of the endangered bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean Sea.

FishBase

Philippines

FishBase is a global biodiversity information system on finfishes. Its initial goal to provide key facts on population dynamics for 200 major commercial species has now grown to having a wide range of information on all species currently known in the world: taxonomy, biology, trophic ecology, life history, and uses, as well as historical data reaching back to 250 years. FishBase is currently hosted by the Quantitative Aquatics, Incorporated (Q-quatics), (https://www.q-quatics.org/) a non-stock, non-profit, non-governmental organization engaged in the development and management of global databases on aquatic organisms. Management of the FishBase is in the Philippines, while members of the consortium are based all around the world.

For the Oceans Foundation

Costa Rica

For the Oceans Foundation is a community-based organization focused on improving their environment, including the oceans. They organize fundraisers, community-building events, and in-depth training sessions for volunteers engaged in the projects. The projects include the following: Ambassadors for the Ocean which promotes the protection of the Eastern Pacific’s Marine Biological Corridor in the areas between Coco´s Island and Thermal Dome (Costa Rica), Coiba Island (Panama), Malpelo Island (Colombia) and the Galapagos Archipelago (Ecuador) – for this their partner NGO the Ocean Voyages Institute is providing our first vessel; Removal of plastic waste and ghost nets from the ocean; Responsible tourism and sustainable fishing; and combatting the consumption of sea turtle eggs.

Forest and Bird

New Zealand

New Zealand's largest national conservation organisation. The Society's mission is to preserve and protect the native plants and animals and natural features of New Zealand. Active on a wide range of conservation and environmental issues. These include the protection of native forests, tussock grasslands, wetlands, coastlines and marine ecosystems, energy and resource conservation, sustainable fisheries and sustainable land management. Also involved in South Pacific rainforest conservation work and is working to ensure the protection of Antarctica from environmental damage.

Forkani Forum

Indonesia

Forkani is a community organization on Kaledupa Island, Wakatobi Regency that was to achieve sovereignty over the management of coastal natural resources based on local wisdom. Forkani organizes and builds the capacity of community groups, encouraging the community to be able to manage their natural resources sustainably without ignoring the values ​​that exist in society. This includes good seaweed cultivation, environmentally friendly fishing, marine surveillance, conservation credit, building a fish bank, and octopus fisheries management. They partner with Blue Ventures

Promoting environmental friendly fisheries and aquaculture in the Black Sea region on a long-term basis and their sustainable management;

Fundaciao ENT

Spain

The ENT Foundation is a private research center whose aim is to develop research and innovation projects in the areas of environment, development and international cooperation. They work mainly with other research centers, public administration and NGOs. They are part of the network MedReAct, a network of Mediterranean organisations orientated to recuperating the Mediterranean ecosystem, and part of Seas at Risk, amongst others. They have expertise in fishing and aquaculture projects.

Fundación Vida Silvestre Argentina

Argentina

Founded in 1977 and since 1988 Vida Silvestre represents in Argentina the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the Argentine Wildlife Foundation)has been working on solving the main environmental issues of Argentina. Its mission is "to propose and implement solutions for conserving nature, promoting the sustainable use of natural resources and responsible behaviour on the part of mankind in the context of climate change'. This includes a significant marine component, including establishing marine protected areas and a sustainable fishing model for the country, and protecting marine species including cetaceans.

Gesellschaft zur Rettung der Delphine

Germany

GRD was founded by Rollo Gebhard, German mariner and documentary filmmaker, and is dedicated to the conservation of wild dolphins and their habitats by supporting research, promoting public awareness and lobbying for better protection. The organization works for a ban of ecologically unacceptable fishing practices, such as driftnets, which cause the senseless death of hundreds of thousands of dolphins, whales, seals, sharks, and seabirds every year, or setting purse-seine nets around dolphin schools to catch tuna.
