Fish as a Resource
Fisheries management - Aquaculture - Sustainable fishing - Sustainable seafood - all initiatives which aim at a responsible, sustainable and respectful approach to seafood as a resource
Gili Eco Trust
Indonesia
Gili Eco Trust was founded to protect coral reefs around Gili islands from irresponsible and destructive fishing, educating fishermen about legal techniques of fishing and authorized zones so that there would be no more bad fishing practices.
In addition to marine conservation, they have expanded their activities to waste management and sustainable eco tourism.
Global Ocean Health
USA
The Global Ocean Health Program is a project of the National Fisheries Conservation Center, which focuses on adapting to, mitigating, and combating the effects of ocean acidification, warming, hypoxia (lack of oxygen), and sea level rise. The aim is to protect seafood at the source while the oceans become "hot, sour, and breathless." This includes developing strategies for strengthening and conserving fisheries, ecosystems, and opportunities for ocean user groups, scientists, policy makers and conservation advocates to engage each other constructively.
Good Fish Foundation
Netherlands
Founded to manage and develop the Dutch VISwijzer (Seafood Guide), the GFF works with and alongside European businesses to accelerate the transition towards a sustainable seafood supply chain and sustainable aquaculture development. They aim to do this by promoting market demand for sustainable seafood and by assisting consumers and businesses throughout the seafood supply chain in making informed and responsible buying decisions in the Netherlands and Europe.
GreenWave
USA
GreenWave trains and supports regenerative ocean farmers in the era of climate change. Their polyculture farming system grows a mix of seaweeds and shellfish that require zero inputs, while sequestering carbon and rebuilding reef ecosystems. They work with coastal communities throughout North America to create a blue green economy—built and led by regenerative ocean farmers.
Guardians of the Sea Charitable Trust
New Zealand
The Guardians of the Sea Charitable Trust state 'We believe that through championing healthy fisheries, sustainable fishing practices and working collaboratively to support those who care for and understand their environment, we can continue to strive for more fish in the sea.' In order to reduce the harmful impact on the ocean and ensuring more fish in the water, they work on initiatives in New Zealand that support the reduction of juvenile mortality, bycatch, fuel consumption and sea floor damage.
Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute
USA
The GCFI is a non-profit organization that works throughout the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico region, renowned for their annual meetings since 1947, actively promoting the exchange of information on the use and management fo marine resources in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. GCFI has worked for over 2 decades on developing coral-reef marine protected areas networks in the Caribbean and has developed the capacity of MPAs and their managers. They work together with multiple organizations, including UNEP and NOAA, to address issues in the area, including marine litter, sustainable fisheries, coral reef monitoring, amongst many others.
Guyana Marine Conservation Society
Guyana
The Guyana Marine Conservation Society (GMCS) was established with the primary mission of ensuring the future existence and population recovery of all the four species of marine turtles known to nest in Guyana, while addressing the needs of the communities. including engagement of the indigenous communities in alternative income projects to reduce their dependency on harvesting of sea turtle meat and eggs. GMCS is involved in the tagging and monitoring of the nesting marine turtles and awareness campaigns which has played a major role in the declaration of Shell Beach as a Protected Area. Legislation now governs the illegal take of all the endangered species from within that area and persons caught in illegal acts will face the consequences of the law. Other aspects of GMCS thematic areas of work include biodiversity surveys, community outreach, and the design and delivery of environmental education and awareness programs.
Institute for Ocean Conservation Science
USA
The Institute for Ocean Conservation Science works to advance ocean conservation through science. They conduct world-class scientific research that increases knowledge about critical threats to oceans and their inhabitants, provides the foundation for smarter ocean policy, and establishes new frameworks for improved ocean conservation. The Institute's research focuses on advancing ecosystem-based fisheries management, a strategy which recognizes that the oceans' problems are interconnected and that species and habitats cannot be successfully managed in isolation; as well as on advancing knowledge about vulnerable and ecologically important marine animals that are understudied. They are dedicated to developing scientific approaches to sustainably manage forage fish, small schooling fish that are food for marine mammals and seabirds but are being depleted from our oceans. They conduct world-class scientific research that increases knowledge about critical threats to oceans and their inhabitants, provides the foundation for smarter ocean policy, and establishes new frameworks for improved ocean conservation. The Institute is part of the Stony Brook University School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences
International Game Fish Association
USA
The IGFA is a non-profit organization committed to the conservation of game fish and the promotion of responsible, ethical angling practices, through science, education, rule making, record keeping and recognition of outstanding accomplishments in the field of angling.
Kuruwitu Conservation & Welfare Association
Kenya
After setting up the first Locally Managed Marine Area to combat overfishing and pollution, the ecosystem has made a resounding comeback, with biodiversity surging. KCWA have fostered a tourism sector, boosted catches for fishermen and women in nearby areas, and encouraged the national government to greatly expand the protected area. Their stated aim 'is to manage sustainable marine resources for the local fishing community and environment as a whole, as well as to set 'best practise' for the expansion of marine conservation projects along the Kenya coast.'
