Marine Conservation Philippines

Philippines

MCP is dedicated to preserving and protecting coastal resources in the Philippines through education, volunteerism and research. They work to preserve fragile marine habitats like coral reefs and mangrove forests, with an additional aim of improving the quality of life for marginalised fisherfolk in the central Philippines. A volunteer based organisation, international volunteers can join a large professional team of marine biologists, scientists, teachers and dive instructors. Participation in the program involves extensive scuba diving activities, with training offered on site. ‘Since becoming operational in 2015, MCP has led mangrove replantation efforts, and have removed tons of marine debris and ghost nets. Volunteer divers have placed sinkers and buoys in many marine protected areas, improving demarcation and local conservation efforts, whilst volunteers have taught numerous school classes in the municipality about marine issues.’ Their YouTube channel is https://www.youtube.com/c/MarineConservationPhilippines Amongst several others, check out their video about conservation volunteering at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qA6hggVddfs

Mediterranean Seagrass Association

Mediterranean

The mission of Seagrass 2000 is to promote the protection and conservation of Mediterranean seagrass species; to increase awareness of seagrass issues by establishing public and scientific initiatives.

Mission Green Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka

Mission Green Sri Lanka engages local communities and especially young people in environmental projects, including mangrove planting, beach and river cleanups to combat plastic pollution, amongst other projects on land and sea.

Moidjio Centre for Research, Conservation and Development

Comoros

Moidjio is a Comorian research and conservation group which focuses on cetacean and turtle conservation projects, undertaking acoustic, cetacean monitoring and turtle monitoring projects. They also work to stop poaching of sea turtles on the islands and develop a sustainable ethical whale watching industry. They are working on humpback whales, spinner dolphins, green and hawksbill turtles, lemurs, mangroves, seagrass meadows and coral reefs. Their work includes tree planting to protect against erosion, research into mangroves, sea grass and coral reefs. They study sea and terrestrial birds, lemurs and Livingston bats on the islands; plus education programmes in sustainability and English in the local communities.

Nagenahiru Foundation

Sri Lanka

The main objective of the Nagenahiru Foundation is to facilitate the sustainable community management of mangrove ecosystems of the Madampa and Maduganga Lake Wildlife Sanctuary in Sri Lanka.

OMCAR Palk Bay Centre

India

The Omcar Foundation was created in 2007 for the conservation of dugongs, seagrasses, and mangroves through scientific and traditional knowledge. Under the foundation’s auspices, the OMCAR Palk Bay Centre provides services to the local fishing communities in coastal environmental education and awareness, a dugong and marine mammal stranding response, seagrass and mangrove restoration projects, sustainable squid fishery, tree planting, amongst others. Participatory conservation and sustainable livelihoods are key to their mission.

Ocean Conservation Trust

UK

OCT is dedicated to connecting people with the ocean, via a diverse array of projects, including habitat restoration via seagrass and coral reef restoration projects, extensive education and ocean literacy programmes, surveys, amongst others.

Ocean Wise

Canada

A global conservation organization, Ocean Wise operates an number of programmes involving research and education regarding the threats facing the oceans, such as Ocean Wise Seafood which is a sustainable seafood program, Sea forestation which involves restoring, planting, managing and caring for underwater seaweed forests, their Cleanup programme and plastic pollution initiative, marine research and education

Operation Crayweed

Australia

‘Vast underwater forests have gone missing from the Sydney coastline, with repercussions for local fish, abalone, crayfish and coastal marine biodiversity’ according to the project leaders. The aim of Operation Crayweed is to reintroduce crayweed (Phyllospora comosa) to reefs where it naturally occurred, and to re-establish this essential habitat and food source for Sydney’s coastal marine biodiversity.

Oregon Kelp Alliance

USA

ORKA works to develop and protect Oregon's kelp forests. Through ORKA and its partners, an innovative plan is underway to protect and restore targeted areas. ORKA’s approach is ' to understand and possibly mitigate a potential kelp collapse', by engaging science, recreation, tourism and economic opportunities for coastal communities. The problem of sea urchins which destroy the kelp is a particular target for the group.

Planet Indonesia

Indonesia

Planet Indonesia works to conserve at-risk ecosystems through village-led partnerships, thereby empowering rural communities who live in the world's most biologically diverse ecosystems. They aim to reduce inequalities in rural communities, while promoting conservation and sustainable resource management. The marine component addresses coastal and marine management, working with communities to create new fisheries management systems through temporary mangrove reserves and Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMAs). They help restore coastal fisheries that are the lifeline of communities. Their model helps reduce deforestation in mangrove forests, and helps strengthen local food security.

Portofino Seaweed Garden

Italy

Portofino Seaweed Garden intends to be a showcase for the brown Cystoseira seaweed (now Ericaria) on the Mediterranean sea, by creating an submerged seaweed garden, looked after and monitored by Portofino’s Outdoor community. This project is in the early stages, and will involve marine outdoor enthusiasts in protecting, monitoring and restoring Cystoseira seaweed forests and their supporting habitat in Portofino Marine Protected Area. Volunteers will help Outdoor Portofino to transplant, grow and monitor juvenile plants into an 89 hectare study site. Once restored, Cystoseira will immediately take back its role as ecosystem engineer, creating a 3D forest-like environment in which biodiversity can thrive.. Financed recently by the European Outdoor Conservation Association (EOCA)
