Ocean Literacy
Marine conservation awareness and education - Communication projects and initiatives, including visual media, which aim to educate about the oceans and marine life - Ecotourism with a marine conservation component - Aquariums and Zoos - everything which is geared towards improving knowledge and inspiring action
Inland Ocean Coalition
USA
Understanding that behaviour inland in rivers and mountains ultimately can impact on the ocean, the Inland Ocean Coalition unites inland communities who are passionate about a healthy ocean, but don't live on the coast, in land-to-sea stewardship. Started in Colorado, now with chapters around the country, the coalition has adopted the slogan 'You don't have to see the ocean to protect it'.
Innoceana
Costa Rica, Spain, USA
Innoceana is a young international team of professional scuba-divers, engineers, biologists, conservationists and ocean lovers, who work on innovative solutions to protect the ocean. To overcome the problems of lack of knowledge and resources within communities, the interdisciplinary team works on developing low-cost and accessible methods that allow locals to play an active role in monitoring the ocean, thus empowering citizen science. Examples of projects include sea currents monitoring, water quality in Isla del Cano, 3D Coral Reef monitoring, 2D GIS mapping, plastic monitoring, turtle identification, interactive books, amongst others. Raising awareness and educating is an important element of their mission, with the recently opened MCEC in Costa Rica an example of their approach achieving effective marine conservation. Innoceana is registered in Costa Rica, California and Spain.
Institut Francais de la Mer
France
The French Institute of the Sea (IFM) is a public utility association which aims to "make the French know and love the sea" and 'to make them aware of the fundamental role of the oceans in all areas of the sea. human life and the great balances of our planet , as well as to work by all means for the sustainable development of France's maritime activities' The Institute is mainly known for publishing the Revue Maritime, a debate and opinion review and organizes conferences. The areas of concern and intervention of the Institute cover `` the 6 navies '': commercial, State, fishing, service, pleasure, and rescue and concern
Institut de Ciències del Mar
Spain
The ICM is a scientific research institute focusing on 'ocean and climate interactions, conservation and sustainable use of marine life and ecosystems, and impact mitigation of natural and anthropogenic hazards'. The Institute’s team of nearly 300 specialists in different fields of oceanographic research (physics, chemistry, geology and biology) 'give the ICM a broad vision of the marine ecosystem, and the ability to assess changes and human impacts on the environment and seek appropriate solutions.' Amongst their many initiatives is a strong imperative for dissemination, communication and education, for which ICMDivulga is the platform.
Institute for Ocean Conservation Science
USA
The Institute for Ocean Conservation Science works to advance ocean conservation through science. They conduct world-class scientific research that increases knowledge about critical threats to oceans and their inhabitants, provides the foundation for smarter ocean policy, and establishes new frameworks for improved ocean conservation. The Institute's research focuses on advancing ecosystem-based fisheries management, a strategy which recognizes that the oceans' problems are interconnected and that species and habitats cannot be successfully managed in isolation; as well as on advancing knowledge about vulnerable and ecologically important marine animals that are understudied. They are dedicated to developing scientific approaches to sustainably manage forage fish, small schooling fish that are food for marine mammals and seabirds but are being depleted from our oceans. They conduct world-class scientific research that increases knowledge about critical threats to oceans and their inhabitants, provides the foundation for smarter ocean policy, and establishes new frameworks for improved ocean conservation. The Institute is part of the Stony Brook University School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences
Instituto Meu Oceano
Brazil
Instituto Meu Oceano works on the issue of marine litter, acting strongly to generate awareness of and influence policy on waste management along the Brazilian coast, and in particular in developing cities. According to Instituto MeuOceano, the lack of infrastructure and inadequate management practices in Brazilian municipalities that include Coastal Zoning, contribute to the disposal of waste in our oceans. They act to complement efforts that the local community make towards improving solid waste management, including to intercept upstream marine litter, preventing its generation in the first place.
International Seakeepers Society
USA
SeaKeepers is an organization that unites the yachting community with the scientific and educational communities to facilitate conservation. Via their extensive range of programmes, they educate about the marine environments of the world and help restore them. Marine Science and conservation is supported by utilizing member yachts as platforms for marine research, educational outreach, and to deploy oceanographic instruments. These efforts eliminate vessel costs and allow scientists and educators to maximize funding towards research and education. Additionally community engagement programs promote conservation awareness and unite local participants in beach and dive clean-ups.
Irish Wildlife Trust
Ireland
The Irish Wildlife Trust works to create a better future for Ireland’s biodiversity, including the marine environment, by motivating and supporting people to take action to protect biodiversity. This includes wildlife walks and talks, citizen science projects, community & school education, practical conservation activities, and biodiversity campaigning and advocacy.
KYMA Sea Conservation & Research
Switzerland
KYMA's stated function is to 'unite innovative people from various disciplines such as science, media, ethics and communications who work together to protect the ecology of the oceans. KYMA also acts as a think tank to advance the huge challenge of protecting the oceans in the 21st century with creative and concrete means. These include projects and informing the public.' Amongst other activities, they organize expeditions, educate via workshops and talks, support practical projects such as the seagrass meadows in Greece. The work of NWRES in researching the critically endangered Mediterranean monk seals in eastern Libya is also supported by KYMA.
Kap Natirel
Guadeloupe
The Kap Natirel association was created to lead the Guadeloupe Marine Turtles Network (RTMG) as part of the Marine Turtle Restoration Plan in the French Antilles. Over the years it has become a well-established marine environment conservation organization in the region. Their focus is in particular on marine turtles, sharks and rays, and lionfish (an invasive species in the Caribbean region). They also coordinate the French Antilles Shark Network (Reguar).
Kaskazi Environmental Alliance
Kenya
KEA is dedicated to providing comprehensive environmental education to East African communities. KEA was formed in response to the continued devastation of the marine/coastal regions of East Africa resulting from pollution, destructive fishing practices, and over-exploitation of natural resources exacerbated by a virtual lack of environmental awareness. These combined threats have resulted in a severe decline in many marine species and an unprecedented degradation of critically important habitats, such as mangroves and coral reefs. The destruction of entire ecosystems has, in turn, undermined the well being of the local people.
