Coral Triangle Initiative on coral reefs, fisheries and food security CTI-CFF
Indonesia
Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI-CFF) is a multilateral partnership of six countries working together to sustain extraordinary marine and coastal resources by addressing crucial issues such as food security, climate change and marine biodiversity. The countries involved are Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Solomon Islands and Timor Leste
Coral Vita Conservancy
USA
Structurally, the Coral Vita Conservancy is a project within the larger non-profit Social and Environmental Entrepreneurs (SEE), established by Coral Vita Inc in order to put into practice the work of 'restoring coastal ecosystems, advancing environmental and social impact through charitable activities'. The Coral Vita Conservancy’s team of scientists, educators, and innovators are experienced in managing ecosystems that sustain coastal communities. They are restoring coral reefs in the Grand Bahamas damaged by hurricane Dorian, with the aim of supporting communities which are reliant on the oceans.
Coralive.org
Switzerland
Coralive.org focuses on 'coral reef restoration and protection, management of marine protected areas, conservation education and developing alternative livelihood programs for coastal communities'. They have developed a method to accelerate coral growth and enhance coral resiliency via mineral accretion technology. Their coral restoration projects are active in Jamaica, Madagascar, Kenya, Seychelles, Maldives and Philippines. Seagrass and mangroves are also in their sights, with replantings and transplanting projects underway in places such as the Maldives. They are also involved in MPA management in Madagascar.
Cornwall Wildlife Trust
UK
The Cornwall Wildlife Trust is a charitable organisation founded in 1962 that is concerned solely with Cornwall, England. It deals with the conservation and preservation of Cornwall's wildlife, geology and habitats managing over 50 nature reserves covering approximately 4,300 acres, amongst them Looe Island. They are actively involved in marine conservation, with extensive training of volunteers to monitor marine mammals, respond to strandings, and survey of marine environments. A recent project to restore Cornwall’s seagrass meadows in the Fal Estuary has attracted attention, amidst their many other projects protecting life on the land and in the sea.
Costa Rica Wildlife Foundation
Costa Rica
CRWF works to ensure the prevalence of wildlife and its habitat through interdisciplinary and community-based stable conservation initiatives. This includes research, education, communication, and marketing, all aimed to produce conservation action to reduce the threats that wildlife is facing. In addition to the many terrestrial based projects, their marine projects include SEACOW which is directed towards the West Indian manatee in the Costa Rican Caribbean and PEZ SIERRA which focuses on the critically endangered sawfish found in the region.
CostaSalvaje
Mexico
CostaSalvaje/Wildcoast is an international group that aims to conserve the coastal and marine ecosystems and wildlife around California and Latin America. They are fighting to conserve more than 31.9 million acres of globally significant wild coastlines, islands, lagoons, and oceans. Through educating local communities, advocating for conservation policies, and establishing and managing protected areas, Wildcoast is trying to reduce the impact of climate change, conserve coral reefs, prioritize sewage treatment, and protect wetlands and coastal wildlands.
DEEPWAVE e.V
Germany
DEEPWAVE e.V. was founded in 2003 by the marine biologist and deep sea researcher Onno Groß and a small group of ocean enthusiasts in Hamburg. Since then, it has successfully campaigned regionally and internationally for the protection of the oceans and their inhabitants. DEEPWAVE's goal is to contribute to the development of environmentally friendly structures for the marine ecosystem, as well as to inspire individuals to conserve the oceans. They do this by raising awareness of the threats to the oceans, spreading scientific knowledge, contributing to improve marine policies, and providing a forum for networking.
DMAD Marine Mammals Research Association
Turkey, Montenegro
DMAD 's stated goal is ‘to raise both scientific and public awareness, to identify and locate habitat problems and to implement the actions needed in order to conserve the marine biodiversity in the Eastern Mediterranean.’ DMAD mainly works scientifically on marine mammals. They currently have seven different projects running across three different countries, with the two main target areas being the Eastern Mediterranean and the Adriatic Sea. They engage with public by supporting citizen science and ecological awareness, including volunteer programmes which involves joining their researchers and scientists along the Adriatic coasts of Montenegro and Albania or in the Levantine and Aegean Seas around Turkey. They are the founders of SANCET (Southern Adriatic Network of Cetacean, Elasmobranch and Turtle Standing). Montenegro Dolphin Research is also one of their projects.
Dahari
Comoros
Dahari’s mission is to create sustainable and productive landscapes with Comorian communities. This includes preserving rivers and marine ecosystems while improving the living conditions of the population. Their strategy grounded in five areas: rural development (agriculture, agroforestry, livestock farming), the management of terrestrial natural resources, the management of marine resources, biodiversity conservation (including ecological research) and ecotourism. The marine projects focus on sustainable fishing including sustainable techniques and diversification into alternatives such as drying, monitoring fisheries and coral reefs, and conservation education by engaging the local public in marine management initiatives. One such success was the temporary closure of four octopus fisheries which significantly increased catches after a short time.
Dakshin Foundation
India
Dakshin Foundation’s mission is to inform and advocate conservation and natural resource management, while promoting and supporting sustainable livelihoods, social development and environmental justice. Their work aims at building community capacities for conservation and the benefits thereof. The marine component of their work focuses on biodiversity and resource monitoring, including sustainable fishing and a marine flagships programme which includes sea turtles, sharks and rays, sea snakes and coral reefs, in each instance engaging the community in monitoring and conservation initiatives.
