Earth Justice

USA

Earth Justice is a non-profit public interest environmental law organisation which uses the power of law to protect people's health, to preserve natural places and wildlife, to advance clean energy, and to combat climate change. Earthjustice fights to protect the ocean ecosystem from overfishing, massive pollution and habitat loss, aiming at a healthy ocean strong enough to weather the changes ahead.

Earth Law Center

USA

ELC works 'to transform the law to recognize and protect nature’s inherent rights to exist, thrive and evolve'. Members of the group focus on the rights of nature in law, in order to reverse what they regard as a trend of environmental degradation, and that current environmental laws have been unable to solve this. Ocean Rights are included in their portfolio, which includes a focus on coral reefs, marine pollution, rights of coastal communities, marine protected areas amongst others. They have offices in Washington State, California, Colorado, Mexico City, New York, and Toronto, and operate internationally. On their website are toolkits giving information of various specialist areas such as coral reefs and marine pollution.

Earth Policy Institute

USA

Founded by Lester R. Brown in 2001, Earth Policy Institute functioned as an environmental think tank, providing research and analysis on environmental indicators and making policy and lifestyle recommendations aimed at promoting environmental and economic sustainability. Closed on Brown's retirement in 2015

Earthwatch Institute

USA

EarthWatch is an international non-profit that supports scientific field research by offering volunteers the opportunity to join research teams around the world. This unique model is creating a systematic change in how the public views science and its role in environmental sustainability.

East Africa Whale Shark Trust

Kenya

The East African Whale Shark Trust is a grass roots project dedicated to marine conservation in general and whale shark conservation in particular. Based on Diani beach the EAWST was founded in response to the increase in the whale shark population along the Kenyan coast as well as increased interest from the tourist sector. The increase in the number of whale sharks along the Kenyan coast has meant they have become a target. All that is required by international law is that whale shark trade be monitored. The EAWST provides a research centre for collecting and analysing data on the local whale shark population, its habits and movements. The Trust works with other regional organisations, the long term goal being to increase protection and promote the conservation of the biggest fish in the ocean.

Eco-Union

Spain

Eco-union is an environmental association founded by a multidisciplinary group of professionals and eco-activists. The association's focus is on the transition towards sustainable development models in the Euro-Mediterranean region through the linkage of economics and ecology. Projects include Blue Tourism, a project focused on the analysis and evaluation of coastal and maritime tourism at the global level. It comprises a regional sector review, as well as scalable regional initiatives to strengthen maritime governance and environmental management in the coastal and maritime sector.

EcoOcean

Israel

EcoOcean is a non-profit Israeli organization established by the Weil family and a group of leading scientists and environmentalists in 2002. The organization’s stated mission is 'to empower people to care for the marine and coastal environment of Israel and the region'. This is achieved via research, education and civic engagement. They promote protection of the marine environment, so that this will become a 'high priority amongst the general public and policy makers in Israel'. Their areas of focus are the Mediterranean and the Red Sea

Ecologistas en Accion

Spain

Ecologistas en Accion is a confederation of more than 300 environmental groups in towns and cities in Spain. It is part of the so-called social ecologism, which holds the view that environmental problems have their origin in an increasingly globalized production and consumption model, from which other social problems also derive, and that must be transformed if an ecological crisis is to be avoided. To this end, it carries out awareness campaigns, public or legal complaints, while at the same time developing concrete and viable alternatives in each of the areas in which it carries out its activity. In addition to the local groups, there are thematic areas integrated by volunteers from different groups, one being about the Marine Environment.

Ecology Action Centre

Canada

The Ecology Action Centre is a member-based environmental charity in Miꞌkmaꞌki (Nova Scotia) taking leadership on critical issues from biodiversity to climate change to environmental justice. Their coastal team works and advocates to protect coastal ecosystems and to help Nova Scotians understand the risks of coastal climate change and the adaptation options available. Their Marine programme aims to protect the marine ecosystem and maintain sustainable fisheries which support coastal communities and livelihoods. Here they focus on three main areas: i. Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture, advocating for fishing and aquaculture policies and practices that minimize harmful impacts on the marine ecosystem. ii. Marine Protection, supporting and advocating for marine protection and pollution reduction in the marine environment, both within Canadian waters and on the high seas. This includes marine protected areas, protection from bottom trawling. iii. Sustainable Seafood, working towards increasing consumer and retailer access to properly labelled, sustainable seafood choices, including SeaChoice.

Ecomares
