Costa Rica

In Search of Sierra Fish – Costa Rica, or Searching for the Sawfish - is a project of the University of Costa Rica that was born in 2015, and is currently part of the Costa Rica Wildlife Foundation's marine conservation program, aimed at generating essential information for the effective protection of these species and the areas they inhabit. The project involves an interdisciplinary team that seeks, through research, environmental education and outreach, to promote the protection and conservation of sawfish, their habitats and coexistence with the communities they interact with in Costa Rica, and beyond.

Environment America

USA

Environment America is a policy and action group which advocates for the whole environment. Their Clean Water Network and Oceans campaigns have a direct impact on marine life. Via their Oceans Campaign they advocate against new oil and gas drilling in the oceans, and to phase out existing ocean drilling operations. Their stated goal is to 'Protect our oceans and marine wildlife by creating marine ‘wildlife refuges,’ places where life can gain a foothold on survival'.

Environment Society of Oman

Oman

ESO works to help conserve Oman's natural heritage and raise awareness about different environmental issues, with the marine projects focusing on turtles, whales and dolphins. and protecting the Damaniyat Islands Nature Reserve.

Environmental Awareness Group

Antigua

EAG is Antigua & Barbuda's first environmental organisation, committed to preserving Antigua & Barbuda's environments and promoting the sustainable use and management of their natural resources since 1989. EAG's strategies focus on involving community members in efforts to build environmental awareness and to protect the environment from harmful practices. Included amongst their projects is sea turtle conservation.

Environmental Defense Fund

USA

A general environmental group with a marine campaign, the US-based Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) is known for its work in the area of global warming, ecosystem restoration and oceans. In addition to working with fishing communities to offer transitional and financial support, the organisation's goals include the curbing of overfishing and also begin sustainable fishing models in several countries. EDF has national offices in New York and Washington, and several regional offices in the USA, and also in London in Europe, and in China, Mexico and Indonesia.

Environmental Justice Foundation

UK

Under the banner 'Protecting people and planet. Environmental security is a human right', EFJ has a strong marine component, supported by the view that the pressure which is being placed on the ocean is putting the lives and livelihoods of billions of people across the globe at risk. Their ocean campaign focuses on combatting illegal and unsustainable fishing, and the human rights abuses resulting from these activities, and protecting the coastal communities and wildlife that depend on the ocean.

Environmentalist Foundation of India

India

EFI works in 14 Indian states to revive the severely polluted freshwater bodies in the country, including lakes and ponds which suffer contamination due to human activity. It focuses on community based collaborative conservation efforts. It has been included in the marine conservation database since inevitably what enters any waterway will eventually make its way to the ocean if not stopped.

The work of Equilibrio Azul focuses on conservation and protection of turtles (see Facebook page for latest info)

Equilibrio Marino

Spain

Equilibrio Marino promotes the effective protection of marine areas to guarantee the recovery of marine ecosystems, using current scientific research. One such project is the SOS Corales (SOS Corals), which is a recovery program of the Candelabro coral and orange coral colonies of the coast of Spain. Amongst their many projects are the creation of artificial reef parks, protected marine micro areas in the Alboran Sea, a Sea Brigade which reacts to marine pollution including involving divers in underwater ocean cleanups in the south of Spain, and advocacy for sanctuaries for cetaceans.

EurOcean

Portugal

The European Centre for information on Marine Science and Technology (EurOcean), established in 2002, is an independent scientific non-governmental organisation whose membership comprises leading European marine research, funding and outreach organisations. Its aim is to facilitate information exchange and generate value-added products in the field of marine sciences and technologies between a wide range of governmental and non-governmental bodies. EurOcean provides comprehensive databases of information on topics related to marine science and technology in Europe with priority given to three main domains: Marine Knowledge Management, Marine Research Infrastructures and Ocean Public Outreach and Awareness activities. It was founded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and the French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea (Ifremer).

European Cetacean Society

Europe

The European Cetacean Society promotes and co-ordinates the scientific study and conservation of cetaceans. They gather and disseminate information about cetaceans and other marine mammals to Members of the Society and the public at large.

European Elasmobranch Association

The European Elasmobranch Association (EEA) is a non-profit umbrella organisation of European organisations dedicated to the study, management and conservation of sharks, skates, rays and chimaeras (cartilaginous fishes or chondrichthyans). The objectives of the EEA are to coordinate the regional and international activities of its member organisations to advance research, sustainable management, conservation and education on cartilaginous fishes throughout Europe.
