Global Coral Reef Alliance

USA

GCRA's Biorock electrical reef regeneration technology directly stimulates the natural energy-generating mechanisms of all forms of life, and is the only method known that can grow Coral Arks to save species from extinction. The Biorock method keeps entire reefs alive when they would die, providing high coral survival when 95-99% of surrounding reef corals bleach and die from heat shock. It also grows back dead reefs and severely eroded beaches at record rates in places where there has been no natural recovery. Current projects are now being operated in Indonesia, Bali, Jamaica, the Republic of Maldives, Papua New Guinea, Seychelles, Phuket, Thailand, Mexico and Grenada.

Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network

Australia

GCRMN works through a global network to strengthen the provision of best available scientific information on and communication of the status and trends of coral reef ecosystems, for their conservation and management. GCRMN is the world's premier coral reef data network, bringing together a range of government and non-government partners in tracking status and trends of the world's coral reefs. It covers biophysical variables as well as socioeconomic variables, through the 'SocMon' initiative. The main activity is the preparation of regional and global periodic assessments on the status and trends of coral reefs. Established by ICRI, supported by UN.

Global Fishing Watch

USA

Under the general aim of 'Sustainability through transparency in global fishing activity', Global Fishing Watch is the result of a partnership between Oceana, SkyTruth and Google that 'identifies apparent fishing activity and provides the world's first global view of commercial fishing'. It is an online tool that allows anyone in the world to see what 35,000 of the world’s largest commercial fishing vessels are doing, and to track them in near-real time, for free. 'Our purpose is to create and publicly share knowledge about human activity at sea to enable fair and sustainable use of our ocean. We use cutting-edge technology to turn big data into actionable information. We believe human activity at sea should be common knowledge in order to safeguard the global ocean for the good of all.'

Global Ghost Gear Initiative

Canada

The Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI) is a 'cross stakeholder alliance of fishing industry, private sector, corporates, NGOs, academia and governments focused on solving the problem of lost and abandoned fishing gear worldwide'. The Initiative was founded by World Animal Protection, with the aim to improve the health of marine ecosystems, protect marine animals from harm, and safeguard human health and livelihoods. They have programmes at work throughout the world, and work in close partnership with many organizations, including Healthy Seas, Ghost Diving, Bracenet.net amongst many others. GGGI have an app, ‘Ghost Gear Reporter’, which can be downloaded, to help with worldwide data collection, for use with any ghost gear related work, including beach clean ups.
