Global Underwater Explorers
USA
Global Underwater Explorers (GUE) is motivated by the ‘desire to safely explore and protect the underwater world and to improve the quality of scuba, technical, and cave diving education, as well as aquatic research.’ GUE members support conservation through a variety of affiliates, including Ghost Diving, Reef Check, and Baykeeper, as well as a variety of academic research projects, such as the coral reef algae documentation and testing, and live shipwreck exploration. Their own initiative, Project Baseline, involves participants worldwide, who survey and record their local aquatic environments (photos, videos, and data logs) to serve as a baseline against which future changes can be measured. This enables building public awareness and supporting political action. There are more than 100 projects in almost 40 countries currently supporting Project Baseline's mission.
Global Wildlife Conservation
Re:wild launched in 2021 combining more than three decades of conservation impact by Leonardo DiCaprio and Global Wildlife Conservation. The focus of their work is on restoring biodiversity. Collectively with partners in more than 50 countries, in 2020 they worked to conserve over 45 million acres of wild places and to reverse the plight of 835 threatened species. This includes the ecosystems which impact on ocean life, such as corals reefs, mangroves, seagrasses, amongst others.
Good Fish Foundation
Netherlands
Founded to manage and develop the Dutch VISwijzer (Seafood Guide), the GFF works with and alongside European businesses to accelerate the transition towards a sustainable seafood supply chain and sustainable aquaculture development. They aim to do this by promoting market demand for sustainable seafood and by assisting consumers and businesses throughout the seafood supply chain in making informed and responsible buying decisions in the Netherlands and Europe.
Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation
USA
The Moore Foundation funds programs in a number of fields, including the environment. Their Environmental Conservation Program balances long-term conservation with sustainable use. The program establishes models for collaboration that can be replicated and expanded around the globe, and seeks to create lasting change in how land, freshwater and coastal marine ecosystems are managed.
Great Barrier Reef Foundation
Australia
The Great Barrier Reef Foundation was established in 1999 to help protect and preserve the Great Barrier Reef. The foundation raises and manages funds for scientific efforts on the Great Barrier Reef carried out by Australian research institutions to conserve, restore and protect the reef. This includes understanding human and natural causes of changes to the reef, and promoting human welfare for reef dependent populations. The foundation was formed in response to the bleaching event of 1998.
Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup
Canada
The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is a national conservation program that provides Canadians the opportunity to take action in their communities wherever water meets land, one bit of trash at a time. Initiative. Originally an initiative lead by Vancouver Aquarium, now Ocean Wise, and operates in conjunction with WWF Canada.
Green Fins
UK
Green Fins comes with the subtitle ‘Protecting Coral Reefs Through Sustainable Tourism’. The initiative by The Reef-World Foundation-UNEP aims to: ‘educate and empower people to reduce pressures on coral reefs by adopting sustainable tourism measures’. They focus on marine tourism activities operating in South East Asia, Caribbean and the Indian Ocean, working with business operators, communities and governments, helping to implement environmental standards for the diving and snorkelling industry through a code of conduct. See their website for details of approved operators.
Green Heritage Fund Suriname Dolphin Project
Suriname
The Green Heritage Fund Suriname works for the protection of the wild dolphin population through establishment and maintenance of a sound community monitoring program that contributes to decision-making regarding the estuary of the Suriname River. Working on the conservation of dolphins in the estuary inspired GHFS to expand its conservation efforts to include the marine environment in its entirety. This shift in focus inspired the organization to work towards sustainable use and management of the marine environment, which ultimately motivated the GHFS initiate or promote the use of marine spatial planning in Suriname. Addressing marine litter is also an important focus of the organization.
GreenWave
USA
GreenWave trains and supports regenerative ocean farmers in the era of climate change. Their polyculture farming system grows a mix of seaweeds and shellfish that require zero inputs, while sequestering carbon and rebuilding reef ecosystems. They work with coastal communities throughout North America to create a blue green economy—built and led by regenerative ocean farmers.
Greenovation:Hub
China
Greenovation Hub (GHub) is ‘an independent environmental think tank with a global outlook, registered with the Beijing Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau.’ They work to promote sound climate and environmentally friendly policies through research, advocacy, negotiations, education and dialogue. One of their projects is focused on Ocean Conservation, which has as its aim that China leads the conservation of high seas biodiversity and plays a leading role in global ocean governance and collaboration. To achieve this, GHub works in China ‘to advance sustainable fishery and catalyze the building and effective management of science-based and representative marine protected areas (MPAs) by engaging experts in science, policy, law, business, academia and communications.’
