Greenpeace International

The Green Peace organization works on several issues in the marine environment, amongst their many various interests. With its vast networks across the world, the organisation urges big corporations to act to reduce their plastic footprint to end the flow of plastic into our oceans. In addition, Green Peace is engaged in addressing unsustainable industrial fishing practices, climate change and ocean acidification. Greenpeace's oceans campaign focusing on three major threats to the world's oceans: overfishing, pirate fishing, whaling, and intensive shrimp aquaculture.

Guardians of the Deep

South Africa

Founded in June 2019, Guardians of the Deep runs Environmental Education Programmes for children which include the Guardians Curriculum and the Chacma Champions Holiday Programme. Through MasiCORP, they are running the Guardians of the Deep curriculum for students from Ukhanyo Primary and Masiphumelele High schools, and are now also offering the curriculum at Kleinberg Primary School in Ocean View. Partnering with Surf Outreach in Muizenberg, they introduced the world beneath the waves to the surfers that ride them. Blending science, art and storytelling, the students are empowered to explore the ocean from its multi-coloured rock pools to its darkest depths while learning about the lives of the uniquely awesome creatures making it their home. Through this exploration and discovery, students realise the importance of the environment and how our choices are key in bringing about the change much-needed to conserve the natural world.

Guardians of the Sea Charitable Trust

New Zealand

The Guardians of the Sea Charitable Trust state 'We believe that through championing healthy fisheries, sustainable fishing practices and working collaboratively to support those who care for and understand their environment, we can continue to strive for more fish in the sea.' In order to reduce the harmful impact on the ocean and ensuring more fish in the water, they work on initiatives in New Zealand that support the reduction of juvenile mortality, bycatch, fuel consumption and sea floor damage.

Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute

USA

The GCFI is a non-profit organization that works throughout the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico region, renowned for their annual meetings since 1947, actively promoting the exchange of information on the use and management fo marine resources in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. GCFI has worked for over 2 decades on developing coral-reef marine protected areas networks in the Caribbean and has developed the capacity of MPAs and their managers. They work together with multiple organizations, including UNEP and NOAA, to address issues in the area, including marine litter, sustainable fisheries, coral reef monitoring, amongst many others.

Gulf of Alaska Coast Keepers

USA

In 2002, a handful of Alaskan volunteers began protecting the waters and habitat of the Northern Gulf of Alaska by cleaning up marine debris in Prince William Sound. In 2006 these efforts morphed into the non-profit Gulf of Alaska Keeper (GoAK), which has removed over 3 million pounds of toxic plastic debris from over 1,500 miles of critical and sensitive coastal habitat. As the continent's largest ongoing marine debris clean-up organization, GoAK has developed clean-up techniques that make it the most efficient remote coastal marine debris cleanup organization in the world.

GulfBase

Gulf of Mexico

GulfBase is a free, searchable database of people, places, projects, events and organizations in the Gulf of Mexico. It includes information about the Gulf of Mexico, including: its bays and estuaries; reefs, banks and islands; environmental issues; institutions and organizations; people; and an InfoHub with articles on the laws, the science, and socioeconomic issues relevant to management and use of the Gulf; and a Mexican coral reef species checklist. GulfBase aims to be 'a resource for a broad audience of knowledge-seekers: From scientists seeking new collaborators to students researching a science project'.

Guyana Marine Conservation Society

Guyana

The Guyana Marine Conservation Society (GMCS) was established with the primary mission of ensuring the future existence and population recovery of all the four species of marine turtles known to nest in Guyana, while addressing the needs of the communities. including engagement of the indigenous communities in alternative income projects to reduce their dependency on harvesting of sea turtle meat and eggs. GMCS is involved in the tagging and monitoring of the nesting marine turtles and awareness campaigns which has played a major role in the declaration of Shell Beach as a Protected Area. Legislation now governs the illegal take of all the endangered species from within that area and persons caught in illegal acts will face the consequences of the law. Other aspects of GMCS thematic areas of work include biodiversity surveys, community outreach, and the design and delivery of environmental education and awareness programs.

HEPCA Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association

Egypt

HEPCA is a NGO specializing in the field of marine and land conservation in the Egyptian Red Sea. What began with a dozen of concerned individuals grew through the years to become a large network of scientists, professional divers, industry experts, and community members who are pro-active in protecting and preserving the natural resources of the Red Sea, as well as promoting conservation and sustainable tourism practices.

Haiti Ocean Project

Haiti

Haiti Ocean Project (HOP) is in Petite-Rivière-de-Nippes, in the most southwestern region of Haiti. Since its creation in 2007, Haiti Ocean Project has focused on the protection and preservation of marine mammals, sea turtles, sharks, and rays, all endangered in this Caribbean nation. These species groups are the subject of a monitoring network which focuses on the Canal de la Gonâve, a marine channel that extends along the inner southern peninsula of Haiti.

HappyWhale

USA

HappyWhale offers the opportunity to contribute to science through photography of marine mammals. Through its web platform, happywhale.com, images are shared, and individual whales identified, and contributors are notified of who their whale is, as well as of future resightings of their whale. HappyWhale has identified almost every individual humpback whale in the North Pacific Ocean, and has built a global database of over 68000 individuals. This information helps with whale rescue response to entanglement, understanding population change, and education about the world’s whales. An evolving project.

Hawaii Wildlife Fund

Hawaii

HWF is a dedicated to the conservation of Hawaii's native wildlife through research, education and advocacy. The HWF Team is made up of educators, conservationists, researchers, naturalists, communities, volunteers and donors devoted to the protection of Hawaii's fragile marine ecosystem and inhabitants.
