Icelandic Orca Project
Iceland
The Icelandic Orcas research project aims to learn more about Icelandic killer whales and their role in the marine ecosystem. This is a long-term dedicated effort to follow killer whales in Icelandic waters and understand more about their behaviour and the threats they may face. 'To achieve this we use a variety of research techniques, such as acoustic recordings, photo-id, tagging with suction-cup tags, biopsy sampling and underwater observations of their interactions with prey.'(from the website)
InPact. Instituto de Pesquisa e Acao
Brazil
InPact was established in 2020 by researchers in the environmental and sustainability areas. They aim to contribute to the conscious use of natural resources, based on research supported by actions aimed at sustainable practices, environmental preservation and conservation, with the engagement of traditional communities and society as a whole. This includes the rescue, rehabilitation and reintroduction to the natural environment of marine and aquatic animals. They also carry out environmental education activities; monitoring of coral reefs; research into sediment analysis through granulometric analysis, organic matter and carbonate contents; identification and monitoring of macrobenthic species and reef fish, and analysis of the physical and chemical parameters of the water.
Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre
Australia
A purpose-built collaborative facility for marine science and ocean engineering research, IOMRC provides innovative and effective solutions to challenges facing the world's oceans. Built for the UWA Oceans Institute, the IOMRC brings together more than 300 marine scientists across disciplines including biodiversity, fishing, tourism, Indigenous engagement, climate change, oceanography and conservation.
Indo Ocean Project
Indonesia
Indo Ocean Project is a marine research and conservation program in Indonesia. As a field research station located in Nusa Pineda, they have a strong education component, training dive professionals through a conservation-dive master internship program. Their field expeditions host international and local research projects on marine conservation efforts including marine megafauna, coral restoration, ecological monitoring, community outreach and education programs. Projects are at Nusa Penida in Bali, and in Tanjung Bira, South Sulawesi. They also have liveaboard expeditions.
Indonesia Biru Foundation
Indonesia
Based on Lombok Island, IBF is an independent foundation that works on educating society through practical scientific research findings to empower the local community while restoring the marine ecosystem. They focus on coral reef research, restoration, and coastal communities development. While their main approach is science, with the aim to increase the marine literacy of Indonesian citizens, they also work together with a lot of local communities to integrate scientific findings for practical use in the field.
Inland Ocean Coalition
USA
Understanding that behaviour inland in rivers and mountains ultimately can impact on the ocean, the Inland Ocean Coalition unites inland communities who are passionate about a healthy ocean, but don't live on the coast, in land-to-sea stewardship. Started in Colorado, now with chapters around the country, the coalition has adopted the slogan 'You don't have to see the ocean to protect it'.
Innoceana
Costa Rica, Spain, USA
Innoceana is a young international team of professional scuba-divers, engineers, biologists, conservationists and ocean lovers, who work on innovative solutions to protect the ocean. To overcome the problems of lack of knowledge and resources within communities, the interdisciplinary team works on developing low-cost and accessible methods that allow locals to play an active role in monitoring the ocean, thus empowering citizen science. Examples of projects include sea currents monitoring, water quality in Isla del Cano, 3D Coral Reef monitoring, 2D GIS mapping, plastic monitoring, turtle identification, interactive books, amongst others. Raising awareness and educating is an important element of their mission, with the recently opened MCEC in Costa Rica an example of their approach achieving effective marine conservation. Innoceana is registered in Costa Rica, California and Spain.
Institut Francais de la Mer
France
The French Institute of the Sea (IFM) is a public utility association which aims to "make the French know and love the sea" and 'to make them aware of the fundamental role of the oceans in all areas of the sea. human life and the great balances of our planet , as well as to work by all means for the sustainable development of France's maritime activities' The Institute is mainly known for publishing the Revue Maritime, a debate and opinion review and organizes conferences. The areas of concern and intervention of the Institute cover `` the 6 navies '': commercial, State, fishing, service, pleasure, and rescue and concern
Institut Français de Recherche pour l'Exploitation de la Mer
France
IFREMER is an oceanographic institution in France, which focuses its research activities in the following areas: Monitoring use and enhancement of coastal seas, Monitoring and optimization of aquaculture production, Fishery resources, Exploration and exploitation of the oceans and their biodiversity, amongst others.
Institut de Ciències del Mar
Spain
The ICM is a scientific research institute focusing on 'ocean and climate interactions, conservation and sustainable use of marine life and ecosystems, and impact mitigation of natural and anthropogenic hazards'. The Institute’s team of nearly 300 specialists in different fields of oceanographic research (physics, chemistry, geology and biology) 'give the ICM a broad vision of the marine ecosystem, and the ability to assess changes and human impacts on the environment and seek appropriate solutions.' Amongst their many initiatives is a strong imperative for dissemination, communication and education, for which ICMDivulga is the platform.
Institute for Marine Research (Philippines)
Philippines
The Institute for Marine Research is a newly established grassroots non-profit organization that aims ‘to conduct long-term and fine-scale research on coastal marine ecosystems, using this scientific evidence to educate, transform and encourage locally led marine conservation strategies within the Philippines’. Their focus region is Apo Island & Dauin Municipality, Negros Oriental, the Philippines.
Institute for Ocean Conservation Science
USA
The Institute for Ocean Conservation Science works to advance ocean conservation through science. They conduct world-class scientific research that increases knowledge about critical threats to oceans and their inhabitants, provides the foundation for smarter ocean policy, and establishes new frameworks for improved ocean conservation. The Institute's research focuses on advancing ecosystem-based fisheries management, a strategy which recognizes that the oceans' problems are interconnected and that species and habitats cannot be successfully managed in isolation; as well as on advancing knowledge about vulnerable and ecologically important marine animals that are understudied. They are dedicated to developing scientific approaches to sustainably manage forage fish, small schooling fish that are food for marine mammals and seabirds but are being depleted from our oceans. They conduct world-class scientific research that increases knowledge about critical threats to oceans and their inhabitants, provides the foundation for smarter ocean policy, and establishes new frameworks for improved ocean conservation. The Institute is part of the Stony Brook University School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences
