JPI Oceans
Belgium
JPI Oceans is an intergovernmental platform that strives to increase the impact of national investments in marine and maritime research and innovation. In supporting research and innovation JPI Oceans is helping to ensure society has better knowledge of the seas and oceans, and the potential for sustainable blue growth and jobs whilst also addressing the challenges of climate change and human impact on the ocean.
Dedicated to increase the value of national investments in marine and maritime research.
KIMO International
UK, Shetland
KIMO is a network of local governments, working together for healthy seas, clean beaches, and thriving coastal communities, with the aim of preventing pollution, and to protect and preserve the seas and coastal waters of the North East Atlantic and Baltic regions. They are actively involved in many practical issues, including lobbying on issues such as the standards in offshore energy projects, maritime standards and dumping at sea; they educate manufacturers and the public on pollution such as microplastics; they initiate projects such as Fishing for Litter, amongst others. KIMO stands for Kommunernes International Miljøorganisation (Local Authorities International Environmental Organisation) and was founded in Denmark in 1990. With over 80 member municipalities in eight countries, it now represents ‘more than six million citizens in Europe’.
KYMA Sea Conservation & Research
Switzerland
KYMA's stated function is to 'unite innovative people from various disciplines such as science, media, ethics and communications who work together to protect the ecology of the oceans. KYMA also acts as a think tank to advance the huge challenge of protecting the oceans in the 21st century with creative and concrete means. These include projects and informing the public.' Amongst other activities, they organize expeditions, educate via workshops and talks, support practical projects such as the seagrass meadows in Greece. The work of NWRES in researching the critically endangered Mediterranean monk seals in eastern Libya is also supported by KYMA.
KZN Marine Stranding Network
South Africa
The KZN marine stranding network is a group of skilled and trained professionals who provide knowledge, experience and resources to assist with marine strandings along the KwaZulu-Natal coast. They include uShaka Sea World and KZN Sharks Board for dolphins, whales, sharks, seals, turtles and penguins, and CROW (Centre for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife) and SCAR for seabirds)
Kap Natirel
Guadeloupe
The Kap Natirel association was created to lead the Guadeloupe Marine Turtles Network (RTMG) as part of the Marine Turtle Restoration Plan in the French Antilles. Over the years it has become a well-established marine environment conservation organization in the region. Their focus is in particular on marine turtles, sharks and rays, and lionfish (an invasive species in the Caribbean region). They also coordinate the French Antilles Shark Network (Reguar).
Karumbe
Uruguay
Karumbe work for the conservation of biodiversity in Uruguay, focusing in particular on sea turtles and their habitats. They have several sea turtle centres. They also promote the sustainable development of fishing communities, seeking alternatives to reduce the impact of human activities on these migratory animals. The pillars of their work are: Research, Rehabilitation, Conservation and Education
Kaskazi Environmental Alliance
Kenya
KEA is dedicated to providing comprehensive environmental education to East African communities. KEA was formed in response to the continued devastation of the marine/coastal regions of East Africa resulting from pollution, destructive fishing practices, and over-exploitation of natural resources exacerbated by a virtual lack of environmental awareness. These combined threats have resulted in a severe decline in many marine species and an unprecedented degradation of critically important habitats, such as mangroves and coral reefs. The destruction of entire ecosystems has, in turn, undermined the well being of the local people.
Keep FIN Alive
South Africa
Keep Fin Alive is a marine conservation and education campaign in Mossel Bay, South Africa, and beyond. Their campaign mascot, Fin, is a soft shark on a mission to spread awareness of the catastrophic decline in marine populations due to plastic pollution, overfishing and other threats.
Kelp Forest Alliance
The Kelp Forest Alliance brings together people and organizations working on kelp forest ecosystems and aims to enhance the protection and restoration of these valuable ecosystems. The alliance is a global network of people working to restore kelp forests. They produce and share useful information to advance restoration (see their restoration guidebook and their kelp forest restoration project database), foster collaboration between members, track the success of restoration worldwide, and are working on ways to finance more restoration projects. They also work to raise the profile of kelp forests and advocate for stronger conservation of these ecosystems.
Kelp Forest Foundation
Netherlands
The Kelp Forest Foundation has a vision of harnessing the power of giant kelp to help restore the health of the planet. Through their research they aim to reduce the gap in science and knowledge around kelp forests’ ecosystem services, which are known to sequester significant amounts of carbon thereby providing long term solutions to climate change. Their goals include: raising awareness of the economic and ecological importance of kelp forests, driving research, building knowledge and strengthening the science around wild forest restoration and cultivated kelp afforestation. This includes creating giant kelp spore banks. The research and results will be open access and made publicly available
