Marine Megafauna Research Center
Mozambique
Described as the birthplace of MMF which was founded to research, protect and conserve the large population of marine megafauna found along the Mozambican coastline. In recent years, MMF researchers have expanded their efforts worldwide. MMF has been conducting ground-breaking marine research along Mozambique’s southern coastline since 2003, with countless scientific discoveries as a result, and continues with research on threatened marine species, specifically sharks, rays, and sea turtles.
Marine Protection Atlas
USA
Marine Protection Atlas is the only comprehensive database that identifies and tracks fully and highly protected MPAs throughout the world. Highly informative, the MPAtlas supports international marine conservation initiatives by integrating science-based assessments that measure progress toward protecting 30% of the global ocean in fully and highly protected areas by 2030. This application was created by the Marine Conservation Institute in partnership with Astute Spruce, LLC and EcoQuants LLC
Marine Research Foundation
Malaysia
MRF’s mission is to improve the status of marine ecosystems and key species through research, conservation and education, both locally and regionally. The goal of our projects is the sustainable use of natural resources with a practical approach to conservation, and we provide efficient solutions to concerned stakeholders. For many years their focus has been the conservation of marine turtles and their habitats, running community-based turtle conservation projects, in-water research and tracking studies and aerial survey projects to support conservation efforts. Sharks and Dugongs also come within their sphere of influence.
Marine Science Institute
USA
The Marine Science Institute provides engaging and interactive hands-on adventures with San Francisco Bay Area marine life. Led by a team of expert marine science educators, these experiences impact students of all ages, inspiring respect and stewardship for the marine environment. The MSI provides a scientific experience and a memorable voyage into nature for students of all economic backgrounds. Students ages pre-K to College, engage in physical contact with the SF Bay and coast environments ‘to help cultivate their natural sense of curiosity, enrich their understanding of science, and foster a responsibility to protect the environment.’
Marine Science Institute, University of Philippines
Philippines
MSI is involved in research and academic endeavours in marine biology, marine chemistry, physical oceanography, marine geology, and related disciplines such as biotechnology. The institute studies marine ecosystems in its main compound in the National Science Complex and the Bolinao Marine Laboratory in Bolinao, Pangasinan. It also pursues extension work in marine protection and management. The UP MSI regularly hosts workshops, conferences, and training courses on survey and monitoring techniques, coastal zone management, habitat restoration, mariculture, and science-based decision support systems. Public and private agencies can also consult the UP MSI for projects related to marine protection and management, biotechnology, and product development.
Marine Stewards
Singapore
In 2019 Marine Stewards initially focused on sustainable fishing practices in Singapore, and has since expanded its marine conservation programme to encompass Biodiversity, Habitats and Pollution threats to their ocean. They are now represented at engagement sessions with various government agencies.. Their citizen science programme has had several successes, including uncovering illegal sales of the critically endangered shovelnose ray in local wet markets. Their current activities include coral husbandry, reef surveys and monitoring, and responsible fishing.
Marine Stewardship Council
UK
MSC sets a standard for sustainable fishing. Fisheries that wish to demonstrate they are well-managed and sustainable compared to the science-based MSC standard are assessed by a team of experts who are independent of both the fishery and the MSC. Seafood products can display the blue MSC ecolabel only if that seafood can be traced back through the supply chain to a fishery that has been certified against the MSC standard. Founded by the World Wide Fund for Nature
Marine Turtle Specialist Group
USA
The Marine Turtle Specialist Group (MTSG) is one of the more than 160 Specialist Groups and Task Forces that make up the Species Survival Commission (SSC) of IUCN, International Union for Conservation of Nature. The MTSG is responsible for providing information on the seven species of marine turtle and is regarded as the global authority on marine turtles. The MTSG is organized into 10 geographic regions, covering the entire globe, and is administered under the auspices of Oceanic Society, which has its headquarters in Ross, CA, USA.
Marine Watch International
USA
Marine Watch International’s mission is 'to protect the ocean by promoting the sharing of information and fostering collaboration'. One communication medium used is The Ocean Resource, a newsletter which reports on multiple conservation activities and organizations. Their Ocean Conservation Community is a platform space where cooperative networking is enhanced and accelerated using current technology and available to everyone. They have also created an online knowledge hub FundingtheOcean.org which is designed to track, inform and inspire ocean conservation philanthropy.
Marine Watchdogs
USA
Marine Watchdogs focuses on the health of the ocean and the food products that come from it. A member-based nonprofit action company, their mission includes research, education and active projects like seafloor cleanup events. They aim to engage the public and enable ways for people to get involved in ocean ecology via seabed survey and seafloor clean-ups. Their multiple activities include: conducting toxicology tests, alerting the public to contamination issues, conducting marine bio fieldtrips, providing educational resources, and running campaigns aimed at reducing single-use plastic waste and agricultural chemical run-off.
Marine Wildlife Watch of the Philippines
