Marine and Freshwater Research Institute, Iceland

Iceland

Marine and Freshwater Research Institute (MFRI) is a government institute, which employs around 190 staff, operates 2 research vessels and 10 branches around the country, including an aquaculture experimental station. MFRI conducts various marine and freshwater research and provides the Ministry with scientific advice based on its research on marine and freshwater resources and the environment. The main research priorities are 'research on marine and freshwater ecosystems, sustainable exploitation of main stocks, ecosystem approach to fisheries management, research on fishing technology and seafloor and habitat mapping'.

MarineBio Conservation Society

Since 1998, the MarineBio Conservation Society has been a non-profit volunteer marine conservation and science education group working online together to educate the world about ocean life, marine biology, marine conservation, and a sea ethic. They draw attention to and support the many efforts which are underway to address marine conservation issues, with information, providing resources including a website on marine life cycles.

Marmo - Mar Mozambique was established in 2020 for the environmental protection and conservation of the Mozambican sea. This includes promoting biological diversity, developing marine and coastal conservation initiatives, promoting scientific research and ocean literacy and influencing policy by advocating for the marine environment.

Mauritius Marine Conservation Society

Since its creation, the MMCS has developed various programmes aimed at preserving the ecosystem, for instance: attributing greater value to the submarine archaeology, stopping fishing practices using dynamite or underwater weapons, creating artificial reefs, identifying protected marine areas, keeping records of marine mammals driven ashore, identifying and protecting cetaceans as well as creating educational games based on the marine environment.

Me.Ri.S

Sicily

MeRiS works for the protection of marine mammals and their environment in the Mediterranean Sea. It engages in research activities for the protection of the sea and biodiversity, with particular regard to the cetacean population of the Strait of Sicily. This includes scientific training activities through research expeditions, training courses and internships, amongst others. It is engaged in various ecotourism activities with the opportunity to engage in cetacean (whale and dolphin) monitoring activities.

Mead Foundation

Philippines

The Mead Foundation is a family foundation which focuses on environmental issues in the Philippines. They are involved in a significant coral restoration project with the target of restoring 500 acres of coral reef by 2024 in the Zambales area in north easter Philippines. In this, they are partnering with the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium, with the Australian government also contributing funds. They are also developing the Pawikan Project which is a grassroots sea turtle conservation project in the Zambales area, one of the Philippines’ primary pawikan (local term for sea turtles) nesting areas. This project focuses on engaging both local communities and tourists, raising awareness on sea turtle conservation, and educating about environmental stewardship.

MedReAct

Greece

MedReAct’s mission is 'to catalyse action for the recovery of Mediterranean marine ecosystems by ensuring a fair and responsible long-term use of our Common Sea.' MedReAct consists senior marine campaigners and NGOs that jointly worked to reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), and who coordinated the coalition OCEAN2012 in Greece, Cyprus, France, Italy and Spain (ocean2012.eu), which helped securing the CFP main objective of stopping overfishing by 2020. They have now turned their attention to recovery of the Mediterranean ecosystems.

MedSOS Network is a on-profitable, non-governmental organization active since 1990 in matters related to the environment and culture on a Euro-Mediterranean level. It has 120 Full Members who form its annual General Assembly and approximately 3000 Supporting Members. Included in main activities are the issues of: Marine environment and coastal zones, Water Resources, Natural protected areas, local communities, urban environment, Energy and Climate Change

MedSharks

Italy

MedSharks is a research and conservation association which aims to promote knowledge, awareness and protection of the Mediterranean ecosystem and particularly of Mediterranean sharks. It is also part of the Clean Sea Life, an awareness project on marine litter. Over 15 years MedSharks has carried out several research projects on Mediterranean sharks in cooperation with several international research teams. Many of MedSharks’ studies are citizen-science projects.
