The CIESM promotes international, cross-frontier research in the Mediterranean and adjacent waters (Atlantic, Black Sea, Red Sea). It is an authoritative think tank, with 9600 experts exploring and commenting on emerging issues in all marine disciplines. CIESM supports a network of several thousand marine researchers, applying the latest scientific tools to better understand, monitor and protect a fast-changing, highly impacted Mediterranean Sea. Structured in six committees and various taskforces, CIESM runs expert workshops, collaborative programs and regular congresses, delivering authoritative, independent advice to national and international agencies. Their directory lists Marine Research Institutes around the Mediterranean countries in Europe and North Africa.

Mediterranean Seagrass Association

Mediterranean

The mission of Seagrass 2000 is to promote the protection and conservation of Mediterranean seagrass species; to increase awareness of seagrass issues by establishing public and scientific initiatives.

Megaptera

France

Composed entirely of volunteers, Megaptera develops programs for the study, awareness and conservation of marine mammals in Madagascar, in the Comoros Archipelago, in Réunion, the Seychelles, Mauritius and Rodriques, as well as in Djibouti for the whale shark. These programs are developed in partnership with other associations or with private tourist operators. They develop ecotourism support programs for the benefit of local communities.

Metsahallitus

Finland

Metsähallitus manages state-owned lands and waters stretching across about one third of Finland’s surface area, or more than 120,000 km². Roughly one quarter of this, or over 30,000 km², are marine areas. The main aim of the marine conservation work is to ensure the good status of biodiversity and species of the Finnish underwater nature. Mexican Caribbean Manta Ray Project

Mexico

The Manta Caribbean Project takes a multidisciplinary approach to the conservation of manta and mobulid rays, and their habitat in the Caribbean Sea, through robust science and research, while raising awareness. They are a branch of the UK non-profit, Manta Trust. and providing education to the community and stakeholders. Located in the northern Yucatan Peninsula, the transition zone of the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea is thriving with life. The Manta Caribbean Project aims to identify and conduct research on the poorly understood populations of these huge creatures in the Mexican Caribbean.

Mexico

MexicoAzul promotes awareness of the marine habitat, defense of the environment and sustainable development, through the planning and execution of cultural, civic and educational cooperation and development programs. The Foundation for Mexico was born from the desire to create awareness about the importance of marine habitats for human life and the stability of the planet. They aim at promoting the sustainable use of coastal marine ecosystems, and to create an effective system of Marine Reserves and Protected Natural Areas in Mexico

Spain

Set up with the mission of inspiring people 'to take action for plastic free beaches, oceans and rivers', Mi Moana hosts monthly beach cleanups along the Costa del Sol coast line in Andalucía, Spain. They have a triple goal: to educate, to conserve and to regenerate the ecosystems in the ocean.

Micronesian Shark Foundation

Palau

The Micronesian Shark Foundation is a Palauan based non-government organization, established to facilitate the study of sharks both in Palau and throughout Micronesia. Due to the exceptional conservation efforts of Palau, which declared Palau a Shark Sanctuary in 2009, and continuing efforts to protect its islands and waters, the local ocean is rich with fish and healthy corals. This makes it an ideal focus for research and the collection of data, relevant for Palau and Micronesia and more generally for conservation specialists and scientists internationally.

Mind Your Plastic

Canada

Mind Your Plastic’s mission is to solve plastic pollution in Canada. Mind Your Plastic creates change by advocating for Canadian businesses to take impactful steps towards eliminating their plastic pollution footprint, driving towards implementation of changes with government, producers, recyclers and consumers, and supporting and implementing programs to clean Canadian coastlines including their annual Circular Economy Ambassador Program.

Mision Tiburon Costa Rica

Costa Rica

Mision Tiburon Conservation Association is a Costa Rican non-profit organization, with the goal to promote the research, management and conservation of sharks and marine life in our oceans. Founded in 2009 by marine scientists concerned about the drastic decline of shark populations around the world, the organisation focuses on marine research concerning sharks, sea turtles and rays as well as education programs targeted at local coastal communities. The operations center is in Guanacaste Province, in the North Pacific of Costa Rica, and operates in southern Costa Rica as well. The organisation focuses its efforts on three main areas: marine education, marine research and political and social advocacy

Mission Blue

USA

The Mission Blue alliance includes more than 200 respected ocean conservation groups and like-minded organizations, from large multinational companies to individual scientific teams doing important research. The focus of Mission Blue is all about protecting the health of the ocean, by inspiring the action necessary to achieve that goal. They have identified 'Hope Spots', areas which are critical for healthy oceans. 'Some Hope Spots are already formally protected, while others still need defined protection. Under Dr. Earle’s leadership, the Mission Blue team has embarked on a series of expeditions to shed light on these vital ecosystems and ignite support to safeguard them as marine protected areas.'
