Take 3 for the Sea

Australia

A Clean Beach Initiative is an Australia based non-profit organisation focussing on the reduction plastic pollution in the oceans and beaches. As educating people on the risks of marine plastic pollution, the organisation encourages beach-goers to take just three pieces of rubbish before leaving the beach and places near any waterways or bodies. They have created 'the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI), an on-ground network of volunteers, communities and organisations that contribute data to the AMDI Database, and then work on solutions to stop the flow of litter at the source. The AMDI helps communities look after their coastal environment by providing resources and support programs, and collaborates with industry and government to create change on a large scale.' Tengah Island Conservation

Malaysia

TIC runs a wide marine conservation programme focusing on biodiversity on the island on Tengah in Malaysia. Protection of turtles is a significant part of their agenda, as is marine pollution, engagement with the local community, and sustainable tourism. Their conservation programme includes coral reef mapping on Pulau Tengah and other Johor islands, coral reef surveys and monitoring, reef restoration and other habitat studies.

The 5 Gyres

USA

Co-founded by husband-and-wife duo Marcus Eriksen and Anna Cummins, The 5 Gyres Institute is a non-profit organization that works for cutting plastics pollution through giving focus on primary research. The organisation says it fights against pollution through science, art, education, and adventure, eg. as a result of their efforts, the organisation worked to help impose a ban on plastic microbeads used in skincare and cosmetic products in the United States.

The Beach Co-op

South Africa

Their many projects include coral restoration, Microplastics surveys, Beach Cleanups, marine debris extraction, Diving against debris, amongst others

The Mare Foundation (Poland)

Poland

The MARE Foundation works to protect the Polish and Baltic marine environment. The main objectives are the conservation of marine living resources and their habitats through measures aimed at promoting sustainable exploitation of marine and coastal resources, the protection of ecosystems and its components having an impact on the marine environment and raising public awareness of environmental matters, as well as helping people affected by ecological disasters and their effects.

They currently have a vessel, the Mobula 8 which collects macro- and micro-waste for pollution control and research, and are currently developing The Manta, a giant sailing boat/factory ship capable of collecting, processing and recovering large quantities of marine plastic waste. Their mission also includes scientific research and awareness raising against plastic pollution, encouraging volunteers worldwide to join clean-up operations in calm and protected waters - port and lake areas, mangroves, rivers, canals and the sea up to 5 miles from the coast.
