Coral Reefs

Corals and Coral Reef research, monitoring, protection and restoration

Deutsche Stiftung Meeresschutz

Germany

The German Foundation for Marine Conservation is a group of committed animal welfare and nature conservation advocates, who fight for the protection of threatened marine animals and the preservation of marine habitats. They support and carry out projects, campaigns, and initiatives aimed at conserving marine life. This includes marine & nature conservation; animal welfare; science and research; and development cooperation. Since 2022 they have had a long term eDNA Project on Fiji-Island to identify habitats of guitarfish species and of young bullsharks. They support projects to protect sharks, rays, sea turtles and marine mammals, restoration of coral reefs and seagrass beds, for sustainable fishing and ocean cleanups. Their educational and awareness-raising work aims at anchoring the importance of marine conservation in people's minds and actions. ECOMAR

Belize

With a mission to inspire learning and conservation ethics through outreach programs, hands on participation and research, ECOMAR is a conservation organization in Belize with multiple engagements in conservation, including their St. George's Caye Research Station & Field School with supports archaeological and marine research. They also have a Turtle Watch Program which studies sea turtle populations, and are engaged in the Belize Coral Reef Watch Program (part of the Meso-American Coral Reef Watch Program and is an “Early Warning Alert System” for coral bleaching. There is also the Lionfish Project where ECOMAR, the Belize Fisheries Department and other partners work with stakeholders in Belize to manage the invasive lionfish.

Ecomares

Colombia

The Ecomares foundation was established in 2009 in the city of Cali (Colombia) with the aim of contributing to the research, conservation and restoration of biological diversity, especially of marine ecosystems. Their research includes coral reef monitoring and conservation restoration, research and protection of benthic fauna, sustainable fishing practices, amongst others.

Elkhorn Marine Conservancy

Antigua, West Indies

The Elkhorn Marine Conservancy is dedicated to 'enhancing the resilience and local stewardship of Antigua's marine ecosystems through restoration, collaborative management, and conservation'. Their current projects involve coral reef protection and restoration, and the eradication of the invasive lionfish.

Florida Reef Resilience Program

USA

The Florida Reef Resilience Program seeks to develop strategies to improve the health of Florida's reefs and to enhance the sustainability of reef-dependent commercial and recreational enterprises. Supported by many organisations, including the Nature Conservancy

Fragments of Hope

Belize

Fragments of Hope is a community based organization located on the Placencia Peninsula in Belize. They focus on the restoration of coral reef habitats and advocacy for the sustainable management of associated habitats. Coral restoration efforts in Belize are conducted by trained fishers and tour guides, working closely with regulatory agencies, including the Belize Fisheries Department. Their work includes operating coral nurseries and mangrove reforestation projects

Gili Eco Trust

Indonesia

Gili Eco Trust was founded to protect coral reefs around Gili islands from irresponsible and destructive fishing, educating fishermen about legal techniques of fishing and authorized zones so that there would be no more bad fishing practices.
In addition to marine conservation, they have expanded their activities to waste management and sustainable eco tourism.

Gili Shark Conservation

Indonesia

The Gili Shark Conservation Project is an award-winning conservation and data collection program, the first of its kind in the Gili Islands in Indonesia. Situated on the beautiful island Gili Air, they work around all of the Gili islands: Gili Air, Gili Meno, and Gili Trawangan. The goal of their shark research project is to raise awareness for shark- and marine conservation but also to assist the local community and helping the Gili's to become plastic-free. They aim to protect and restore the coral reef environment within the Gili Matra Marine Recreational Reserve and to help to create the first recognized shark nursery ground in Indonesia. To achieve this goal they conduct research using multiple research methods including; underwater roving video surveillance, roving survey dives, photographic identification, coral health index surveys, coral restoration, and land & marine based time-lapse projects. Via weekly conservation classes at the local school and a Plastic Free Paradise Campaign, they are educating the local community and visitors of the Gili Islands about the importance of our ocean and what we can do to protect it.

Global Coral Reef Alliance

USA

GCRA's Biorock electrical reef regeneration technology directly stimulates the natural energy-generating mechanisms of all forms of life, and is the only method known that can grow Coral Arks to save species from extinction. The Biorock method keeps entire reefs alive when they would die, providing high coral survival when 95-99% of surrounding reef corals bleach and die from heat shock. It also grows back dead reefs and severely eroded beaches at record rates in places where there has been no natural recovery. Current projects are now being operated in Indonesia, Bali, Jamaica, the Republic of Maldives, Papua New Guinea, Seychelles, Phuket, Thailand, Mexico and Grenada.

Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network

Australia

GCRMN works through a global network to strengthen the provision of best available scientific information on and communication of the status and trends of coral reef ecosystems, for their conservation and management. GCRMN is the world's premier coral reef data network, bringing together a range of government and non-government partners in tracking status and trends of the world's coral reefs. It covers biophysical variables as well as socioeconomic variables, through the 'SocMon' initiative. The main activity is the preparation of regional and global periodic assessments on the status and trends of coral reefs. Established by ICRI, supported by UN.

Great Barrier Reef Foundation

Australia

The Great Barrier Reef Foundation was established in 1999 to help protect and preserve the Great Barrier Reef. The foundation raises and manages funds for scientific efforts on the Great Barrier Reef carried out by Australian research institutions to conserve, restore and protect the reef. This includes understanding human and natural causes of changes to the reef, and promoting human welfare for reef dependent populations. The foundation was formed in response to the bleaching event of 1998.

Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority

Australia

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority was established to protect and encourage the wise use and understanding of the Great Barrier Reef through the care and development of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
