Coral Reefs
Corals and Coral Reef research, monitoring, protection and restoration
Mauritius Marine Conservation Society
Mauritius
Since its creation, the MMCS has developed various programmes aimed at preserving the ecosystem, for instance: attributing greater value to the submarine archaeology, stopping fishing practices using dynamite or underwater weapons, creating artificial reefs, identifying protected marine areas, keeping records of marine mammals driven ashore, identifying and protecting cetaceans as well as creating educational games based on the marine environment.
Mead Foundation
Philippines
The Mead Foundation is a family foundation which focuses on environmental issues in the Philippines. They are involved in a significant coral restoration project with the target of restoring 500 acres of coral reef by 2024 in the Zambales area in north easter Philippines. In this, they are partnering with the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium, with the Australian government also contributing funds. They are also developing the Pawikan Project which is a grassroots sea turtle conservation project in the Zambales area, one of the Philippines’ primary pawikan (local term for sea turtles) nesting areas. This project focuses on engaging both local communities and tourists, raising awareness on sea turtle conservation, and educating about environmental stewardship.
Moidjio Centre for Research, Conservation and Development
Comoros
Moidjio is a Comorian research and conservation group which focuses on cetacean and turtle conservation projects, undertaking acoustic, cetacean monitoring and turtle monitoring projects. They also work to stop poaching of sea turtles on the islands and develop a sustainable ethical whale watching industry. They are working on humpback whales, spinner dolphins, green and hawksbill turtles, lemurs, mangroves, seagrass meadows and coral reefs. Their work includes tree planting to protect against erosion, research into mangroves, sea grass and coral reefs. They study sea and terrestrial birds, lemurs and Livingston bats on the islands; plus education programmes in sustainability and English in the local communities.
Mwambao Coastal Community Network
Tanzania
Mwambao’s mission is facilitating a network linking coastal communities and other partner stakeholders that builds community resilience and improved sustainable coastal resource management and livelihoods. The network currently has eight member villages located in Unguja, Pemba, Tanga, Bagamoyo and Temeke Districts. Given the extensive marine resources in the area, attention is given to understanding the coastal marine ecosystems, improving fisheries management (with octopus an important catch) and an informed awareness of their natural resources in order to protect them in a sustainable manner. They have adopted Reef Ball technology to restore their coral reefs.
NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program
USA
The NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program brings together expertise from across NOAA for a multidisciplinary approach to studying these complex ecosystems to inform more effective management. They work closely with NOAA scientists in the National Ocean Service, National Marine Fisheries Service, Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research, and National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Service. The Coral Reef Information System (CoRIS) is the program's information portal that provides access to NOAA coral reef data and products.
National Coral Reef Institute
USA
NCRI operates at the Nova Southeastern University Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography near Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In order to assess, monitor, and restore coral reefs through research and education, the National Coral Reef Institute (NCRI) was established by Congressional mandate in 1998. Researchers at NCRI are exploring scientifically sound approaches to understand, assess, monitor, restore and mitigate injured coral reefs. NCRI is recognized by NOAA as one of its external coral reef research institutes. NCRI's management-oriented research is designed to provide solid information and research products designed to help understand, manage and conserve these invaluable assets for generations to come.
Nemo-Net
USA
NeMO-Net is a single player iPad game where players help NASA classify coral reefs by painting 3D and 2D images of coral. Players explore and classify coral reefs and other shallow marine environments and creatures from locations all over the world
Data from the NeMO-Net game is fed to NASA NeMO-Net, the first neural multi-modal observation and training network for global coral reef assessment. NeMO-Net is an opensource deep convolutional neural network (CNN) that leverages NASA’s Supercomputer, Pleiades, to use game data to classify and assess the health of coral reefs around the world.
New Heaven Dive School
Thailand
The New Heaven Reef Conservation Program is 'responsible for much of the marine protection or related activities and on-going maintenance around the island of Koh Tao, working closely with the local community and government groups such as the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources and the Department of Fisheries. Students in [their] program assist on a wide range of ongoing projects, allowing them to immediately apply and practice the skills learned.'
Ocean Frontiers
Cayman Islands
Two time recipient of the Project Aware Environmental Achievement Award, Ocean Frontiers has a history of conservation and environmental projects, including the installation of Grand Cayman's biggest coral nursery where Staghorn and Elkhorn fragments are grown and out-planted to reefs which have coral loss or damage. Other projects include culling the invasive Lionfish, coral bleaching monitoring, coral spawning data collection, shark conservation and tagging, amongst others.
Ocean Quest Global
Thailand, Guadaloupe, Indonesia, Malaysia, Borneo, Philippines, Vietnam
The subtitle of Ocean Quest Global is 'Dive with Purpose'. This organization works in seven countries around the global, specifically on coral reef restoration. After years of research, they have created its own techniques, methodology and material for coral reef rehabilitation, which are based on the idea that coral can be restored on a large scale, in an all-natural and non-invasive way. Through its programs and courses dedicated to securing a sustainable future for coral reefs, the organization focuses on giving back to local communities and protecting the marine environment. They also offer their courses through Sea Shepherd partner dive centers. They are actively involved in the rehabilitation of Maya Bay on Ko Phi Phi Leh Island, Thailand. This project is being carried out in collaboration with the Marine National Parks Operation Centre, and the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation.
Ocean Research and Education Foundation
USA
ORE focuses on two program areas with a strong focus on coral reefs, amongst others: 1. Ocean Research and Exploration Program: promotes the scientific inquiry by supporting field-based research and investigations that span broad geologic time-spans and across multidisciplinary fields. One of the cornerstones of ORE’s research programs has been Dr. Ginsburg’s establishment and operation of the Atlantic and Gulf Rapid Reef Assessment Program (AGRRA) which focuses on the understanding and protection of coral reefs. Additional projects have included the use of submersibles to explore deep sea corals and the investigation into shallow water stromatolites – Earth’s oldest fossils. 2. Ocean Education and Inspiration Program.
