Turtle research and conservation
MAR Expeditions
Mozambique
MAR is committed to being an effective and sustainable partner within the Zavora Bay community, working with the local fishermen to secure their future as well as the future of the marine ecosystems. Their focus is on the movements and abundance of marine animals in Zavora Bay, Mozambique, and beyond. The lab’s core research has focused on manta rays, humpback whales, nudibranchs, and artificial reef and wreck colonization through on-land and underwater surveys since its establishment in 2009. At the same time, via their internships and expeditions, MAR engages with natural scientists, social scientists, university students and engaged naturalists to conduct research and gain experience in fieldwork, and data collection and analysis. The lab is engaged with national and international research institutions conducting research on seahorses, whale sharks, coral reefs, and sea turtles.
MEMANTA
Nicaragua
Sea turtle nests are a sought-after, commercialized resource in Nicaragua and some beaches see poaching rates as high as 100%. To overcome this problem, the young Memanta team have established a scientifically-run hatchery to give the population a chance for survival. They also work on habitat protection measures, and ecotourism, with volunteers engaged in the turtle conservation programme.
MarAlliance
USA
MarAlliance is an international non-governmental organization that ‘designs and conducts collaborative grassroots research and conservation action on threatened marine megafauna such as sharks, rays, turtles and large finfish. Working with fishers and other key stakeholders of the sea, (they) generate essential data on megafauna populations, behaviour and ecology to enable fact-based conservation and management’. The organization supports the creation and expansion of marine protected areas and legislation that enables sustainable fisheries to minimize threats and maximize protection of sharks and rays. MarAlliance is registered in the US (California) and locally in Belize, Panama and Cabo Verde. They work remotely from multiple bases in the US, Belize, Honduras, Panama, Cabo Verde and Micronesia.
Marine Conservation Society Seychelles
Seychelles
MCSS promotes the conservation of the marine environment through education, research and through the implementation of a number of programmes. Current projects include Whale Shark, Turtle and Coral Reef monitoring and an environmentally protective mooring programme. The aims of the society are to improve the conservation of marine ecosystems through scientific, management, educational and training programmes.
Marine Research Foundation
Malaysia
MRF’s mission is to improve the status of marine ecosystems and key species through research, conservation and education, both locally and regionally. The goal of our projects is the sustainable use of natural resources with a practical approach to conservation, and we provide efficient solutions to concerned stakeholders. For many years their focus has been the conservation of marine turtles and their habitats, running community-based turtle conservation projects, in-water research and tracking studies and aerial survey projects to support conservation efforts. Sharks and Dugongs also come within their sphere of influence.
Marine Turtle Specialist Group
USA
The Marine Turtle Specialist Group (MTSG) is one of the more than 160 Specialist Groups and Task Forces that make up the Species Survival Commission (SSC) of IUCN, International Union for Conservation of Nature. The MTSG is responsible for providing information on the seven species of marine turtle and is regarded as the global authority on marine turtles. The MTSG is organized into 10 geographic regions, covering the entire globe, and is administered under the auspices of Oceanic Society, which has its headquarters in Ross, CA, USA.
Mead Foundation
Philippines
The Mead Foundation is a family foundation which focuses on environmental issues in the Philippines. They are involved in a significant coral restoration project with the target of restoring 500 acres of coral reef by 2024 in the Zambales area in north easter Philippines. In this, they are partnering with the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium, with the Australian government also contributing funds. They are also developing the Pawikan Project which is a grassroots sea turtle conservation project in the Zambales area, one of the Philippines’ primary pawikan (local term for sea turtles) nesting areas. This project focuses on engaging both local communities and tourists, raising awareness on sea turtle conservation, and educating about environmental stewardship.
Mision Tiburon Costa Rica
Costa Rica
Mision Tiburon Conservation Association is a Costa Rican non-profit organization, with the goal to promote the research, management and conservation of sharks and marine life in our oceans. Founded in 2009 by marine scientists concerned about the drastic decline of shark populations around the world, the organisation focuses on marine research concerning sharks, sea turtles and rays as well as education programs targeted at local coastal communities. The operations center is in Guanacaste Province, in the North Pacific of Costa Rica, and operates in southern Costa Rica as well. The organisation focuses its efforts on three main areas: marine education, marine research and political and social advocacy
Moidjio Centre for Research, Conservation and Development
Comoros
Moidjio is a Comorian research and conservation group which focuses on cetacean and turtle conservation projects, undertaking acoustic, cetacean monitoring and turtle monitoring projects. They also work to stop poaching of sea turtles on the islands and develop a sustainable ethical whale watching industry. They are working on humpback whales, spinner dolphins, green and hawksbill turtles, lemurs, mangroves, seagrass meadows and coral reefs. Their work includes tree planting to protect against erosion, research into mangroves, sea grass and coral reefs. They study sea and terrestrial birds, lemurs and Livingston bats on the islands; plus education programmes in sustainability and English in the local communities.
NETCET
Adriatic Sea
The stated main objective of the NETCET project is 'to develop common strategies for the conservation of cetaceans and sea turtles in the Adriatic through regional cooperation. Due to the migratory nature of these species cross-border collaboration and shared management responsibility between Adriatic states is crucial in order to plan effective long-term conservation strategies.'
Namibian Dolphin Project
Namibia
The Namibian Dolphin Project is a research and conservation organization run by several independent scientists and educators. Their mission is primarily to research Namibia’s cetaceans to generate data on these populations that can be used for their conservation through management. Their focus is on coastal dolphins, as well as humpback whales, right whales and leatherback turtles. Additionally they are work with the community through an outreach programme to increase awareness of the Namibia’s marine life.
