Cetaceans
Whales, dolphins and porpoises - conservation, research, education, protection
Tropical Marine Research for Conservation
Philippines
‘Founded in 2005, TMRC is a small research and conservation outfit conceived to help promote research and conservation of marine mammals and their habitats in Southeast Asia, particularly in the Philippines. It specializes in abundance surveys (using DISTANCE-based line transects and photo-ID), monitoring marine mammal by-catch, studying marine trophic ecology and grass-root level conservation education. It also has expertise in fish biology and fishery-related problems, plankton studies and rapid resource assessments.’ (Need to confirm whether still in operation)
Tursiops Marine Research
Spain, Balearic Islands
Tursiops researches cetaceans and their threats in the Balearic Islands, so that management measures can be based on scientific knowledge. Their stated belief is ‘the best way to fight for the protection, conservation and sustainability of cetacean populations in the Mediterranean is through science, with rigorous research.’ Their focus includes sperm whales (including evidence of collisions, to better understand this significant threat), assessment of underwater pollution via analysis of the underwater noise level in Ibiza and Formentera, through passive acoustic monitoring. Its correlation with the presence of cetaceans, especially bottlenose dolphins, development of marine parks, amongst other activities.
Turtle Island Restoration Network
USA, Costa Rica
In 1989 the Sea Turtle Restoration Project (STRP) was launched under the auspices of the Earth Island Institute to protect endangered sea turtles in ways that make cultural and economic sense to the communities that share the beaches and waters with these threatened creatures. It is now an independent organization called Turtle Island Restoration Network. With offices in the USA in California and Texas, and Costa Rica, TIRN has been leading the international fight to protect sea turtle populations worldwide, and is a leading advocate for the world’s oceans and marine wildlife. Their range has expanded to include whale sharks, coho salmon and other marine species under threat They work through grassroots empowerment, consumer action, strategic litigation, hands-on restoration, environmental education, and by promoting sustainable local, national and international marine policies.
WWF Canada
Canada
World Wildlife Fund Canada is the country’s largest international conservation organization. They are working towards completing a national network of marine protected areas, safeguarding the Arctic, supporting leading-edge research to protect Canadian wildlife and habitats, a significant element of which is ocean based marine life.
WWF New Zealand
New Zealand
Looking after the oceans and the animals that live there is one of WWF’s top global priorities, and because Aotearoa New Zealand has stunning and unique sea life, our focus here is on looking after our marine animals - especially those on the brink of extinction like the Māui dolphins. WWF-New Zealand also work with local communities to protect our endangered species, and look after the beautiful native bush and amazing landscapes of Aotearoa New Zealand' (WWF)
Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association
Tanzania
WIOMSA is dedicated to promoting the educational, scientific and technological development of all aspects of marine sciences throughout the region of Western Indian Ocean (Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, South Africa, Comoros, Madagascar, Seychelles, Mauritius, Reunion), with a view toward sustaining the use and conservation of its marine resources. The Association has about 1000 individual members as well as about 50 institutional members from within and outside the region.
Whale Wise
Iceland
Whale Wise studies populations using a variety of methods, in order to gain an in-depth understanding of each system. They currently research the interaction between whales and human activity in Iceland, working towards a sustainable whale-watching industry in Skjálfandi Bay in Iceland. 'We assess the response of blue and humpback whales to whale-watching encounters, with the aim of guiding a suitable conservation plan for both whales and people. Second, through citizen science, we engage with local communities, and fishermen in particular, to understand local whale distribution and the relationship between whales and people in Iceland' .
