Cetaceans
Whales, dolphins and porpoises - conservation, research, education, protection
Marine Connection
UK
Marine Connection was founded in 1997 after being directly involved in campaigning against, and successfully closing down, the last dolphinariums in the UK. The charity is dedicated to the protection, conservation and welfare of dolphins, whales and porpoises – securing a safer future for cetaceans across the globe. It addresses many of the threats these marine mammals face, lobbying governments and liaising with decision-makers to create or change legislation laws to ensure better protection for cetaceans – both in the wild and in captivity.
Marine Conservation Society Seychelles
Seychelles
MCSS promotes the conservation of the marine environment through education, research and through the implementation of a number of programmes. Current projects include Whale Shark, Turtle and Coral Reef monitoring and an environmentally protective mooring programme. The aims of the society are to improve the conservation of marine ecosystems through scientific, management, educational and training programmes.
Marine Mammal Center
USA
The Marine Mammal Center is a private, non-profit U.S. organization that was established for the purpose of rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing marine mammals who are injured, ill or abandoned. It is a veterinary research hospital and educational center, dedicated to the rescue of ill and injured marine mammals.
Marine Megafauna Research Center
Mozambique
Described as the birthplace of MMF which was founded to research, protect and conserve the large population of marine megafauna found along the Mozambican coastline. In recent years, MMF researchers have expanded their efforts worldwide. MMF has been conducting ground-breaking marine research along Mozambique’s southern coastline since 2003, with countless scientific discoveries as a result, and continues with research on threatened marine species, specifically sharks, rays, and sea turtles.
Mauritius Marine Conservation Society
Mauritius
Since its creation, the MMCS has developed various programmes aimed at preserving the ecosystem, for instance: attributing greater value to the submarine archaeology, stopping fishing practices using dynamite or underwater weapons, creating artificial reefs, identifying protected marine areas, keeping records of marine mammals driven ashore, identifying and protecting cetaceans as well as creating educational games based on the marine environment.
Me.Ri.S
Sicily
MeRiS works for the protection of marine mammals and their environment in the Mediterranean Sea. It engages in research activities for the protection of the sea and biodiversity, with particular regard to the cetacean population of the Strait of Sicily. This includes scientific training activities through research expeditions, training courses and internships, amongst others. It is engaged in various ecotourism activities with the opportunity to engage in cetacean (whale and dolphin) monitoring activities.
Megaptera
France
Composed entirely of volunteers, Megaptera develops programs for the study, awareness and conservation of marine mammals in Madagascar, in the Comoros Archipelago, in Réunion, the Seychelles, Mauritius and Rodriques, as well as in Djibouti for the whale shark. These programs are developed in partnership with other associations or with private tourist operators. They develop ecotourism support programs for the benefit of local communities.
Moidjio Centre for Research, Conservation and Development
Comoros
Moidjio is a Comorian research and conservation group which focuses on cetacean and turtle conservation projects, undertaking acoustic, cetacean monitoring and turtle monitoring projects. They also work to stop poaching of sea turtles on the islands and develop a sustainable ethical whale watching industry. They are working on humpback whales, spinner dolphins, green and hawksbill turtles, lemurs, mangroves, seagrass meadows and coral reefs. Their work includes tree planting to protect against erosion, research into mangroves, sea grass and coral reefs. They study sea and terrestrial birds, lemurs and Livingston bats on the islands; plus education programmes in sustainability and English in the local communities.
Montenegro Dolphin Research
Montenegro
In 2016, DMAD Marine Mammals Research Association initiated a conservation effort called Montenegro Dolphin Research in order to highlight the necessity of transboundary cetacean conservation between Montenegro and its neighbouring countries. MDR undertakes a year-round survey effort in the coastal waters of Montenegro to collect knowledge on distribution patterns and encounter rates of the bottlenose and striped dolphins. The research also targets photo identification in order to define the residency patterns in Montenegro. MDR aims to encourage community development through the active involvement of a wide range of stakeholders from fishermen to early career researchers and volunteers, with the aim of engaging the public in conservation, and to understand the benefit of environmental cooperation.
